Pregnant 4lb yorkie A patient of mine just told me her 4 lb yorkie is pregnant for 2 months now and she (the yorkie) only has a month more to go before delivery . Yes you read it right!!! I was soooo pi$$ed. I told her dogs are only pregnant 63 days. I told her to get the dog to a vet now as she will need a c-section!! To top it off she is talking about the yorkie dad being bigger than the mom. This is a bit of a dilema as I am thinking this patient and her husband are BYB's but she is also a patient of mine. I want to report the situation but what would I report and to whom? I have offered to take the yorkie and would provide all her care but I am sure they are just laughing at me....any suggestions??? |

I'm not sure there is anything to do there but, to provide support. We all know that breeding a smaller female is not the moralistic/ethical or safest thing to do, most are aware of the ramifications. Now if this little girl is not being taken care of, bad living environment, nutritional needs not taken care, or being abused then you would have something to report to the Animal Control. This little girl probably has a week left before she whelps. In regards to the male being larger, well that is a misnomer. More to it than just that, although you have concerns and they are valid. The reason is this person probably does not know the dogs within either of the dog's pedigree and what either one can produce. Now that being said, the mother controls the pups sizes while they are in utero, but there are other concerns. Will her birth canal expand to the size necessary to whelp maybe a fat baby, a little larger than normal? It's sad that so many look at these wee ones as just dogs and don't take the responsibility and precautions necessary to insure what is best for them. |
A neighbor's 4lb female got impregnated by a larger male, relative's dog while on vacation together. He said the male was the size of Buddy. 16lbs. I wanted to die. However she gave birth to 4 girls, one passed at birth the other three thrived and are beautiful. He said she had no problems at all. She was 4yrs old and it was her first and only litter. I hope your little one does as good. |
I really don't know what you could do about it if anything. If she is a BYB looks like she would know how long they carry pups. I was talking to a women the other day about breeding her 3 1/2 pound yorkie. I went off the deep end and starting going on how she was going to have to have a csection.. I was really giving it to her good. Then she looks at me and said both my girls are that size and have had 2 other litters and did fine. I really felt stupid. That taught me to keep my mouth shut until I get all the information..lol You may have a girl 8 pounds have to have a csection and one 4 pounds do fine. I don't feel comfortable breeding under 5 pounds but some do and do fine. Jenna was 5.12 and I am worried about that but then again I worry about all of them. |
She isnt my little one although I WISH SHE WAS!!! She is not even a year old yet and this was her first heat. I truly hope she has no problems because I know this couple and I know they will not take her to a vet. I have told them if she has ANY problems to call me and I will take her. Quote:

It just irks me to no end. She is still a puppy herself!!! I know they are only after the money. I see how this couple approaches the ladies medical problems and payment for services etc and I know they will not do right by this young momma or her pups! I am just gonna say my prayers for her! |
