I'm thinking about breeding...
 
Hi everyone! I have an almost 8 month old Yorkie who I am thinking about breeding once or twice. Can anyone give me any tips on how to get started to find the right female? I'm new to this so any tips and hints would be helpful. Do I charge a stud fee? Do I get pick of the litter? People have told me this but I want to get the info right from actual breeders.

Is your dog registered and breeding quality?

Honestly if I was you I would forget about breeding him all together. After mating, your male will probably start MARKING ALL OVER YOUR HOUSE. Are you willing to deal with belly band for the rest of the dog life for 1 or 2 mating?

There are a lot of articles about breeding on the web: Reasons why and why not to. If one is looking for reasons to agree with why one wants to, they are out there. Kind of like looking for a 57 Chevy, if you look hard enough you will find one.

I guess a sticky would be fine, but, also putting in the library.

Over the last couple of days I've been doing a lot of googling on this subject. Maybe adding those links in the library would also be beneficial.

Yes, there are lots of articles available IF someone is willing to search for them. This article is easy to understand and yet covers so much information - it would be nice to have as a sticky to link or refer new members to when they come to YT with their questions.

ETA: I said sticky but was really thinking it should be in the YT Library.

I don't want to title it "Breeding Your Dog"...bc that could encourage breeding...in a way, ya know? Thread title ideas...

Having a tough time w/ titling bc it starts off w/ the "myths" (good thing!)...but then gets into genetics, whelping etc....

The one area of this article that might need to be addressed - and you breeders will know best on this one - is under the "I Want to Make Some Money" section. There it mentions keeping the puppies for a minimum of 8 weeks....should there be a special notation that for small breeds (like yorkies) the recommended time to keep puppies is 12 weeks?

Glad your critiquing. And yes, but, it should state that it is recommended that pups should be kept a minimum of 12 weeks and weighing over 2 pounds.
