My Pregnant Yorkie
 
My Lexy is almost 3yrs of age.... She weighs 4.5lbs and I just found out that she is pregnant! The vet suggests around 5 weeks. This was an unintentional pregnancy. I am very scared because of her size. Do you think that 4.5 lbs is high risk for having pups? I've already went out and bought her the puppy food of her brand. I've been reading all of what I can find on the internet. Are there any experienced breeders on here, or anyone who has any advice, information, or suggestions?

There is a risk for any female that is bred. Then their are certain factors that increase the risk even more--being small, under 5 lbs, the inexperience and lack of knowledge of the owner/breeder, the size of dam/sire and the dogs in their lines, etc. To answer your question, her small size and your inexperience breeding do make for a higher risk.

Did your vet offer you the option of spaying her? it is a high possibility that given her size a C section might have to be done. Are you prepared for the cost of emergency surgery?

The vet said that she don't think it is a big deal due to the size of the male.... I figured that I would take her back to the vet in about two weeks or so to actually see the pups... see how many and see if they think she would be okay having them vaginally

I say what's done is done. All you can do now is read as much as possible about whelping and talk to your vet. Make sure you ask any question that may pop in your head and remember the only dumb question is the one not asked. If there are any Breeders in your area ask them for help. After the pups are born I would consider getting her spayed so that you don't have anymore unintentional litters.

yes, I've known for two days now and have been reading sooooo much about it. Once its done, she will definitely be getting spayed! I'm already a nervous wreck and we still have about 4 weeks left! My Lexy is so special to me and I just want to be the most prepared as I can be! I actually prefer her to have her pups at the vet since I am inexperienced, but the vet that I take her to is not a 24 hr vet.....

No disrespect to your vet, as they go to school and most are general practictioners and are not versed in individual breeds. However, breeding to a smaller male is a misnomer, it does not guarantee that the pups will be small as the female controls the size while the pups are in utero. There are so many factors to consider when breeding Yorkshire Terriers. And it is a big deal when breeding them. So, many things can go wrong. The worst being you can lose your girl and the litter.

ok, if you have read enogh by now you know that you need to start getting ready, you need a whelping area, a whelping box and ALL basic supplies. I start getting ready as soon as I breed my dogs.So you have only 4 weeks to get ready. you NEED to do a search of this site for whelping supplies, whelping box, whelping pudding, newborn puppy care, and ask as many questions as they come to mind. Whelping a litter is NOT for the faint of heart, even for the experience breeder is always that fear in the back of the head.

it's still not too late to spay her at 5 weeks. I personally would have her spayed and not risk her life but of course this is my opinion.

I would say be prepared for a c-section regardless. My girl Laynee weighed 5.15 lbs before pregnancy. She had 4 pups by emergency c-section after about 9 hours in labor. She was eclamptic too so i almost lost her. I almost wish i would have agreed to the spay/abort but i couldn't bring myself to do it at the time. I was lucky i didn't lose her or the pups. Momma was spayed during her c-section and i'm happy. Now i have her and the best pup anyone could ever ask for.
I wish you luck and hope you do right by her but just prepare yourself for the worse and pray for the best. If i could go back i would have never made her go through it but i let my heart and emotions stop me.

My yorkie is pregnet as well. Although, she is a 7 pound yorkie. I decided to let my yorkie have a c-section, to be on the safer side. That is also what my vet advised. She is due in about 2 to 3 weeks. I have not yet started my yorkie on puppy food. Is it a good idea to get that started? The only thing is that if i change her food now, she could possibly get sick. Please help and give me some advise on this. thanks.
