What's the real value of a morkie?
 

Hi everyone- I know it's hard to assign a monetary value to a furbaby, but this info is important when you're buying a puppy from a breeder/shop.

How much ($$) is it really a morkie yorkie/maltese mix?
What are the reasons the breeder wouldn't register the puppies?

I felt in love w/ a "yorkie" as I visited a pet shop 4 months ago, & decided to purchase him despite I had no plans on acquiring a puppy & w/o undergoing any previous investigation about the breed nor akc. They told me he was NOT akc registered, therefore, he had a $300 discount ($800+tax). I asked if that was an indicator he wasn't purebred, but they affirmed that he WAS purebred. One of my mistakes was trusting the salesperson & signing a dozen of papers just relying that she was highlighting the main points in each document. I later read one page which says the shop doesn’t guaranty the puppy is purebred.

He is beautiful & a joy. But I'm concerned because, instead of tan, white hair has grown on about 40% of his body, & gray is substituting the black/blue. I suspect he is a mix, maybe a "morkie." I still love him, but would really appreciate your insight, as I believe the pet shop should not charge more than they should and I will submit a complain. Later I learned a friend of mine got a female yorkie from a local breeder for the same price and akc registered... ouch.

I usually wouldn't respond to a question like this but in this case I had to. I have a Morkie who is worth more than anyone could ever offer. You can't put a price tag on love. The happiness and love that I get from Belle can't be measured in dollars. In the first place why would you buy from a pet shop if you wanted a truly healthy puppy to begin with. God only knows where those puppies come from and what their background is. If you're going to pay over $800.00 for a puppy, buy from a good breeder and know for sure what you are getting. You can complain to the store all you want and they won't do a thing. People buying these puppies at outrageous prices are what keeps them in business. They wouldn't be selling them if no one bought them. I know it's hard to resist those sad little faces in those cages, but people continue to buy them so that's why they are there. Get a DNA test at Petco and find out what your baby's genetics are. If it's not purbred Yorkie, are you going to love in any less? Were you buying to breed? Hope not especially not knowing the medical history of the parents. I don't mean to sound bitchy, it just seems to me that you buy a puppy to love no matter what. I paid far less for Belle from a good breeder and I have a beautiful, happy and loving little girl who is one of the main reasons I wake up in the mornings.

must likely he is breaking his color. all yorkie goes through that. the whitish silver will turn into a tan color on the head where as the whitish silver will turn into a blue on the body and can later break into a silver.

Maybe the breeder was on AKC suspension.

Well, like many other yorkie talkers you found this site sort of late... you should have done your home work before hand and you would have realized a Pet Store is the worse place to get a puppy. Now you will learn a lot here.
I personally do not think you can ask anything else to the pet store, since you were informed the puppy was not registered and you accepted. Also you should know that a registry paper is not a "proof of great quality" at all. The fact that a dog is AKC registered does not mean is a great quality.
It was answered in another post that your puppy may just be breaking colors and it is true... yorkies can change colors a lot, and very light yorkies are not uncommon, including silver, and that is what your puppy sounds like. The silver in the head will turn into gold, the body if turns silver will stay silver.
The tendency is lighten up until about 3 years old.
To ask how much a MORKIE really costs is a tricky question.... as it is with any dog or breed... how can you say that someone can or can not charge this or that figure for the dog they are selling? It goes back to the beginning,
you should have done your research before you bought the puppy.
And there is more to it.. the price of something with LOVE VALUE... How can you price it? If someone loves a morkie, it be may be worthy thousands of dollars if you can ever put a number .... and for a puppy mill looking for profit it may be worthy some hundreds of dollars.

I wish you love the little thing and enjoy years of unconditional love from it !!! and i am sure that you will never be sorry you have it ! and if you ever decide to get another dog/companion you will either go to a shelter or research until you find a nice responsible breeder !

ANGELEYES- I understand your point, and knowing whether he is purebred or not won’t affect in any way my feelings for my puppy. We’re really bound by now, and of course I’m not thinking on losing him. I just believe that info is necessary as I will seek for a partial reimbursement in case he is not purebred.
I now know it wasn’t a wise decision to buy from a pet shop, but one sometimes believes buying from a reputable source guarantees quality—this is not the case now. What you say about puppy breeding and pet shops might be true, I never thought about that. But it’s true that most breeders breed for profit, if this wasn’t the case, they would give them (puppies) away free =)

smartpuppiepets-- Yeah, as you have seen I have been learning a lot here in this community. And yeah, I know I should have done my research first, but well, can't go back and the only thing left is looking forward to what can be done now to prevent future missteps or unnecessary worries.

This is the first time actually that I get a "it's normal, will change" so hope to calm down.

As a breeder/exhibitor and based on your puppies pic in the avitar and what you described, your puppy is not a Morkie....but a yorkie. Just going through the changes that yorkies do. What you have described as what is happening to his coat color....he's going to be a very light colored yorkie (what we call blue, but just not the dark steel blue as described in the standard) the white on his head will turn to a beautiful gold. It takes about 2 years for them to go through their complete morphing........

Just saw the pic you added to your album today.... and I agree, he's ALL Yorkie, and a very cute one at that. He's just going to be light. My Yorkie Tiki went thru the same color change and is still changing at almost 2 years old.

Morkies can not be AKC registered.

I would not pay more than $100 for one. I would not go to a breeder. I would say you could find them in a shelter if you just keep looking.

The real value of your dog, morkie or yorkie, is up to you, if you love him he is priceless. :)

Each dog is unique and special in it's own way, when I encourage people to support good breeders, it's never because I think only purebred champions are loveable, it's because some breeders are breeding for the betterment of the breed and others are breeding for income. Unfortunately, no good breeders sell their dogs in pet stores, so I also encourage people not to buy from pet stores and also encourage local pet stores not to sell puppies. I hope you can buy your pet supplies from pet stores that do not sell puppies, these are just outlets for puppy mills. Whenever you buy a dog, you are approving of the what the breeder has chosen to do.
