I have a 6 month old female yorkie and wanted to know when will she get her first period? How long will it last? She is about 4 pounds. I would like to breed her if i can find a male yorkie about the same size.

Your girl is 2 small to breed. It is very dangerous. Heat is between 5 and 14 months. 1st heat is 2 wks and 4 wks after 1st heat. they go into heat every 6 to 8 months.

Your little girl can come into heat anytime from 6 months on but you should never breed her on a first heat.

I would recommend you wait until she matures to see how big she ends up as an adult...it's not wise to breed a female under 5 pounds.

I would also make sure she is healthy and within the breed standard before making the decision to breed her. Have her bile acid tested, her knees certified, her eyes and heart checked. What is her pedigree and what size are her anscestors?

There is a lot to consider before choosing to breed your female. Please be sure to keep her away from any un-neutered males during her cycle as she is too young and too small to breed at this point.

I have her paper work from her breeder but it doesn't tell me how big her ancestors were but where i bought her the guy had the whole litter and they were all about the same size and he told me she wouldn't get any bigger than 5 or 6 pounds. She doesn't seem to be growing anymore though. She is about 4 pounds, since her last vet visit.

Yorkies on the average do not have their first "heat" until approximately 10 to 14 months of age.

Can I ask why you wnat to breeder her? Are you prepared to lose her.

There is much more to breeding than putting two dogs together for breeding.

Since you are unaware how long a Heat Cycle last, it is very evident that you have not conducted any research.

Here's a few things that one must consider.

Is your girl a good representation of the breed (how does she match up against the standard)

What lines is she from (pedigree)?

Does she come from a long line of free whelpers?

Have all the required tests been performed on her dam and sire? Have you begun to have all required tests on her, bile acids, hips and knees x-rayed, heart, kidneys, eyes and ears tested by specialists. These tests need to be performed on the dog you plan to breed her too and should have all the attributes also.

Do you have a hefty bank account should anything go wrong with the whelping.

Are you prepared to obtain all necessary equipment needed for whelping?

Are you prepared to give up a minimum of 12 weeks of your life to whelp and raise the litter properly. Because once whelping time is near you cannot leave the house.


If you plan to breed; dogs don't have periods, they go into heat or have cycles.

The above listed is just a few things that one needs to do prior to breeding. It takes years of research

Let me add, one never breeds a female before her 2nd cycle.

No reputable breeder will guarantee size.

Paper work will not tell you anything about her ancestors. Did the breeder provide you with a pedigree?

Weight is only one aspect. Much more to deciding if a girl is breeding quality. You must have her examined by a vet that understands the breed and have a sonogram of her reproductive organs. Just because a girl is 5 pounds does not mean she can carry a litter to term if she concieves more than 2 or 3.

thank you very much for your advice as i said on my add i would like to, didn't say i was going to. I have researched everything that needs to be done before breeding. I also know its dangerous being that she is very small. It was just a consideration. I have all that it takes to breed her but no im not ready to lose my baby! ...

You've received very good advise. Please consider everything you have been told. Enjoy your little girl and just give her lots of love. Breeding is certainly not something to be taken lightly.

Please don't take this wrong. But, since you were unaware of when she could possibly come into Heat or how long a cycle lasts, indicated to me you have not researched. Purchasing your girl without a pedigree is another sign that you need more research.

I'm not trying to be rude or attempting you to feel you are being attacked.
But, if you want to be a good breeder, it takes years and lots of research and study, before even purchasing a breeding quality female.

No breeding dog should be purchased prior to the age of 7 months of age and have all the attributes of a show dog.

Trust me, there's much, much more to be researched and learned. Even experienced breeders never stop researching and learning.

maybe i just havent done ALL the researches needed..
like i said it was just a thought and a question...
i never had a female yorkie, i had a male before... so having a female is kind of new to me..

i'm not trying to be rude here but if you don't know where to get her pedigree, you aren't anywhere near qualified to breed her....and that's assuming she ever gets big enough.

just my opinion. and no....i'm not a breeder and will never become one. it takes a heck of a lot of knowledge and know-how, not to mention work, and i honestly believe some things are better left to the experts!
