question about color change Thought I would post this on the breeder page since ya'll are the experts. I have a 3 1/2 year old yorkie who's fur is still very dark. He has some silver/blue mixed in but for the most part he's still black. Is this normal? Do some Yorkies never really turn silver/blue? |
Yes, some yorkies remain black/tan. My Reese is exactly what you just described |
So is it possible he will still change color or once they get to a certain age do you just assume they will stay black/tan? |

For the most part the black and tan yorkies are soft coated. They do change a bit, obtaining what is called cleric gray in their coat. |
Is a soft coat the same thing as cottony or wooly? |
Also just out of curiosity, can dogs that have black and tan coats be shown or would they be disqualified? |

They have been shown.......can they be disqualified, it's very dependent on the judge. |

Yes I was asking about disqualification in the show ring. I've seen a lot of talk on the boards about when the YTCA updated the breed standard to disqualify parti colored. I was just wondering if an adult dog could be shown if it was black/tan. At what age do most Yorkies achieve their adult color? I have a second Yorkie who is almost 1 1/2 years old and he already has a lot of silver mixing in with the black. I think the show world is so interesting. Maybe one day I'll be able to participate but at this stage in life I don't have the extra time or money to be able to. |

Now the DQ for written to diqualify any color than what is identified in the Standard. However, one must also keep in mind that the Standard is written to describe an adult dog. |
Both of my boys come from Dottie Naegele's Northshire line. I feel lucky to have found Mrs. Dottie as she is the only YTCA member in Arkansas and rarely has puppies available. I've seen her show her dogs a few times around here and come to think of it most of them have still been pretty dark but then again I think they were pretty young too. Thanks for being so helpful and willing to answer all of my questions Mardelin. |
