cleft palette puppy-advice needed Well, early sun. morn, my Sassy gave birth to 3 nice size little boys. By the next day the firstborn had lost an ounce. So after checking him out, I discover he has a cleft palette. I am trying to bottle feed him, with the goats milk I had here. He is still losing weight and I can't seem to get much in him, he's very active and hungry acting, Mom is taking care of his potty needs. Has anyone here had any luck saving a puppy with a cleft? Any advice? |
bump this up for you. |
You may have to go to tube feeding, so he does not get milk in his nose/lungs. These little guys can get Pneumonia so fast, if they get milk in their lungs. During feeding, they tend to get the milk up their nose and then in the lungs. Check with your vet too - to check the size of the cleft palette and see what would be his value of life - If he would always be sick or have multiple sugeries or not. Some of these guys I hear do okay and some do not. Also I read an article that giving fish oil to female while pregnant can contribute to cleft palettes. Palettes can also be genetic. |

HI, Yes I have successfully raised a cleft palet baby and she will be 4 in July and is my pride and joy!!! She lost weight alot! I also bottle fed her as I, at the time , did not know how to tube feed. How severe is the cleft? Is it in the soft and hard palet? My girl has never been corrected , as I chose, after much research, not to go with the surgery. She eats hard food and treats and drinks from a water bottle. Yes she makes noises, but she is a healthy little girl. If you have any questions I am more than happy to offer my help from my own personal experience. Each case will be different as I have learned, but I feel these babies are worth saving. Please update when you can . Quote:

Hope all is going well with your pup. I also know of someone with a cleft palate pup who is living to a ripe age... he drinks from a water bottle, not a bowl and gets smaller food. It all depends on how severe the cleft is and if the pup can be bottle or tube fed, he may have a chance. Good luck to you and the puppy! |
I don't know much about puppies, but I am a neonatal nurse. Babies with cleft palate (depending on the severity) usually need to be tube fed until the repair is done. They tend to aspirate during feeding which is why the tube feeding is important. |
Sad to say, the vet determined that little Chance had a very severe cleft and he recommended euthnizing and we did that. I am heartbroken, these little guys can sure grab at our hearts so quickly. Thankfully, the other two are doing wonderful, have already gained an ounce in just 2 days. Thank you all for you good wishes and replies. :aimeeyork |
I am sorry to hear about Chance:( I am glad that the others are doing good. It is really amazing how quickly these lil ones can take your heart. I hope the rest of the litter continue to strive. |
:( Sorry |
Sad to hear about your little one, but I will pray your other guys do well and thrive. :) |
So sorry about little Chance... :( |
