Dewormer for tapeworms in lactating mama? Can any of you tell me what kind of dewormer would be safe to give to a lactating mama with tapeworms? I just noticed one in her stool and I know I need to get rid of them, but have read conflicting info about if the ingredients in the tapeworm medicine are safe for the pups. I have Safeguard and Worm X Plus, would either of these be safe since she is nursing the pups? |
how old are the pups? i have always given my moms panacur (safeguard same thing) when the pups are 2 weeks, and given the pups a little drop too. it has never hurt them |
Neither would be effective. The ingredient that works is praziquantel. The funny thing is, the tapeworm products you mentioned aren't effective against the tapeworm dogs typically get from fleas, though they give you that idea. Here's some info about praziquantel and nursing pups. http://drugsafetysite.com/praziquantel/ Edited to add: fenbendazole is typically the ingredient in most tapeworm products commonly found but is not considered effective for tapeworm caused by fleas. |
Safeguard is supposely safe here's what my box says, I used it with my son's Jack Rusell two weeks after she whelped the Yorkie Rusell puppies, and she was lactating them. Highly effective wormer aids in the removal of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms (taenia) caused by infected rodents & rabbits. Can be put on the food. Can be used in puppies, debilitated dogs, pregnant females and heartworm-infected dogs. Use daily for 3 days. Give 1gm per 10 pounds of body weight. |
They are 2 and a half weeks old. I have always found both Safeguard and Worm X Plus to be effective in treating tapeworms from fleas, but I just wanted to be extra safe since the puppies are nursing. Should I wait and ask the vet tomorrow or go ahead and start treatment with one of these two? |
