I need some advice? Dixie just had her puppies today it has been a couple of hours now and not to long ago she would let me by her and the pups now she will not let me anywhere near them... I can't help her do anything with the pups even if she lays on one....I don't know what to do.... She grawls and shows her teeth everytime I get near.. she has even came after me once.... HELP |
I would just leave her be. She is a new mom and evidently very protective of her babies. Give her some alone time with the pups. Congrats on your new additions! |
You are going to have to leave her a lone for awhile, or she will move all the babies, she will be fine. |
Thank You Thank you all for you advice...i will try to leave her alone I am just worried she is going to lay on one of the puppies and hurt it or even kill it....I guess im just paranoid |
It's not that unheard of for new mommas to be a tad bit possessive over their wee little ones. She'll likely come around in a bit, but I understand your need to check on the pups too. Maybe you could try approaching her with treats, perhaps try 'separate' her from them by using them, or waiting until she is eating to try to check on them. |
First of all, congratulations on your new litter. In my 13 years of raising yorkies I have never had a momma growl or snap at me while I was handling the pups. Personally, I would not allow her to get away with it. You have to be able to handle them in order to know if they are latching on well and nursing. Do you have the momma in a private area or are there other dogs near her? She needs a lot of privacy but she has to know that you are allowed to handle her and the puppies. Just try to talk reassuring to her and hopefully she will settle down. You have to be able to get her to eat and drink. Good luck. |

Congratulations on your new puppies:D |
after you give her some time try sitting as close as you can get and just talking to her for a while. Do that a couple times and never try to touch the pups. She will come around and everytime will be fine. |
