Shaking puppy question
 
Hi There! I have not gotten my new puppy yet. She is 11 1/2 weeks old. I saw her last at 9 weeks and she seemed to be the only 1 who was shaking or shivering.(there are 5 in the litter)
So the breeder took the pups to the vet today for their screening so they will be ready to go to their forever homes. She asked what the vet thought was the reason for the intermittent shaking this puppy does and the vet suggested Nutrical. The breeder said she asked the vet if feeding the pup 3 times a day would help in lieu of the Nutrical. The Vet said yes. So now the breeder is going to feed her 3 times a day and not give her Nutrical and see how she does. (She does not like the "crash" that comes to the dog after the sugar rush of the Nutrical)
Do you think this is the answer or could something else be wrong with this pup? BTW, she and the vet believe it is not hypoglysemia.
Any info you can share would be great. Thanks!

Is your puppy the smallest of the litter? From what you describe it sounds to me like she was having a low blood sugar episode, maybe she hadn't eaten yet? Did the breeder say she does it all the time?

The only experience I have is when we first got Brody he was (and still is) a picky eater and I'd have to put something extra on his puppy food, like a wet mixture to make him eat. Even today, (he's 3) I put a little chicken on top of his food in the morning so he'll eat . . .I don't know how he gets by . . .:rolleyes: he weighs 5 1/4 lbs though . . .It's just very important that you get them to eat because they do crash pretty fast at that age.

Thank you for the reply. She is not the smallest. The other 2 females are smaller. She is VERY active. And no she doesn't shake all the time. She said it was definitely at certain times of the day. She is about 1lb 13oz. so far. And is not a picky eater. Thanks again.

I have always given Nutrical as a supplement to my all puppies. I feed them 3X's a day and give them the Nutrical in between. My Vet strongly recommends it.

At 11 1/2 weeks the litter should still be on 3 meals and a small bedtime meal IMO...I feed mine a bit of chicken and cottage cheese at bedtime.

Thank you for the replies. I was thinking that 2 meals a day didn't seem like enough for such a young pup. But the others are thriving on it. I just cannot understand if the dog is healthy why she shakes and the others do not. The shaking doesn't slow her down a bit either. She goes and goes.

You're right Pat.....My pups are on 4 meals a day until 12 weeks, then go to 3 times until 18 weeks......I do a late meal of Rice Cereal, Goats Milk and a bit of Karo.

A couple things come to mind... I'm not saying that there couldn't be something wrong with this puppy, but sometimes yorkies just shake. A nervous or excited shake. I personally don't feed "meals" to my puppies. They have food available at all times. They know when they are hungry and if they need to eat and they should be able to. Especially at this age.

I agree with the others, this puppy needs at least 4 meals a day with the last one being before bed, I feed mine a mix of kibble and goats milk right before bed. I don't think she is eating enogh..

I was very surprised that the breeder wasn't feeding at least three times a day. Zeus is over a year and still can't go too long between meals without throwing up stomach acid.

I thought about supplementing our Yorkie with chicken - do you cook up fresh chicken or used canned?

Fresh chicken would be best. The stuff in the can may have added sodium.

There is also a condition called "White Shaker Dog Syndrome" which also affects Yorkies. White Shaker Dog Syndrome
