Feeding puppies Our puppies are 4 weeks old. They were born Dec. 28th. Gracie will not nurse them anymore. We are trying to get them to eat the rice cereal and goats milk mixture but they do not care for it. They are each eating about 1/2 teaspoon 4 times a day. They range in weight from 1lb. 7 1/2oz.-1lb. 14 1/2oz. . Is this enough food intake? They sleep a lot. I guess you can say I am a worry wart. |
Get puppy kibble and grind it in the food processor to a very fine powder, and mix it with the goat's milk, also I get the puppy wet can food and mix it with the goat's milk and offer it to them also, I altenate the feeding between the wet and the kibble mixes. best of luck with them. my Chanel stop feeding her babies completly at 6 weeks. hugs, Carmen in nj |
I agree with Carmen. My Abigayle's babies are 5 weeks 2 days. I introduced them to the puppy mix about a week and half ago. They all did well. Chowed it down! Just make sure it is ground up well, no chunks. |
:thankyou2 Thank you so much for responding. I am still a little nervous about losing a pup even though I know it is very unlikely at this age. :embar: |

That is very young for the mother to decide to stop feeding them. I have personally had the most success weaning puppies on Nature's Variety frozen raw food. Just thaw and serve. No need to mix anything up and the puppies wean very quickly on this. You can also mix in some goats milk and easily feed this to the puppies in a syringe. However, these puppies are so young that you are going to have to watch them very carefully for a few weeks. Everyone does things differently, but if the puppies are struggling and don't seem to be doing well trying wean this early, I would sit with the mother and see if you can't comfort her while the puppies try to nurse. Perhaps you could kind of "talk her into it" 3 or 4 times a day for at least another week or week and a half. Good luck! Lisa Farmer TipTop Yorkshire Terriers |

We have been fighting her for a week to keep nursing them. We have been clipping their nails. I am frustrated. We are now grinding up Nutro Natural Choice small bites puppy and mixing it with goats milk. We feed them that mixture and they loved it. They ate quite a bit more than with the rice mixture. I thank you for your advice. |
Hi Carmen, Thanks for the welcome. I have not had soft stools with Nature's Variety. I only use the Chicken and the Beef. I alternate between the two, but I think the little ones do best on the chicken to start. The texture seems to be a little easier for them. You know, puppies can have funky stools during weaning no matter what you feed them. I have tried just about everything and I have never found anything that comes close to Nature's Variety frozen raw. The puppies always wean well on it, even the picky eaters eat it well, and the condition of the dogs is great. You feed much less of this than you would a kibble and we do introduce it slowly. You might give it a try again sometime. Have fun with the puppies! Lisa Farmer TipTop Yorkshire Terriers Quote:
