calcium for after whelping
 

Was wondering what is a good calcium supplement for dogs after whelping. I see oralcal and calsorb. Do these two products do the same thing? Which would you recommend also some one recommended pet tabs calcium. Can you get this at petco or petsmart? or is it better to purchase from revival? Thanks you Debbie

How many pups did your momma have. Not necessary if the litter is under 3.

Oral Cal Plus is better tasting, not causing your girl to vomit. You can not purchase at Petsmart or Petco.

new product from revival, same as calsorb with out the nasty taste, does not make them vomit.

If you must give calsorb, put it on your finger, and rub in bitches mouth, gums, inside of mouth, underneath tongue, then follow with nutrical, don’t just squirt a blob in their mouth. Even if they throw up, it HAS absorbed (not 100%.. but a lot) because the bloodstream picks it up immediately through the mouth..it does not have to be digested to work. Give calsorb or Oral Cal Plus if bitch is exhibiting signs of eclampsia. Some signs are very subtle. immediately. Anything “odd” should be taken as a sign…especially, panting, pacing, restless behavior etc… understanding of course that bitches pant after delivery anyways for a few days.

Holding eclampsiat at bay, so it never comes at all… forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it.

Also, check your dog food for Soybeans, soy protein, or anything related to soy in any way. For SOME reason that is not completely understood by me (many menopause supplements contain soy, or are soy based, so this seems to be a contradiction).. soy protein can interfere with the absorption of calcium in dogs. If your food has soy of any sort, change to a food that does not for the duration of the weaning of the litter.

hello my name is Carmen, I used to use pet tabs from petsmart, but for this litter I started using the Doc's Roy's healthy bones tabs,my girls like them better. I used to used calsorb but again the girls hate it, with this litter I used oracal Plus and Chanel did not vomited or ran away from me...:p:p I keep it on hand for any sign of pre eclamsia, as the first sight or suspicius behavior, I give them 1 ml to bring the calcium up.

Abby hasn't had her puppies she is due this week. Just wanted to make sure I had everything on hand incase She needs it. She is expecting 4 puppies this time. She is so big this time I can't help think one was hiding when I had her xrayed. I have everything for whelping pudding and also I also have happy jacks milkaid. Is the milkaid necessary and will it supply extra calcium?

I've never used the milk aid......don't know the contents. Please check with your vet on the calcium dosage. It should be in accordance with the weight of your girl.

I usually give the goat milk recipe during and right after my girls whelp......making sure that they are eating 4 and 5 meals a day......Don't be surprised if she doesn't want to leave her pups the first couple of days....so, you may have to place her bowls within the whelping box or hold them for her while she eats.

Girls get a bit bigger with each whelp...their muscles tend to lose elasticity.

Thank you! I will keep in close contact with my vet. Abby weighted right at 7 lbs before puppies and right now is about 9.4. She seems so uncomfortable right now I keep wanting to apologize to her. haha:D

Very common. I apologize to my girls throughout their gestation period and during the whelping.......But, once those puppies are born and I see how my girls are in the eliment, just loving being mommies, my heart warms.
