Anyway, my cousin called me yesterday and said her Yorkie was in heat and wanted to know if I'd want to get them together to breed.
Neither one us know anything about breeding per say...although it's obvious we just need to let them do what comes natural I guess? But is there anything else that isn't obvious that we should know?
Another question is how many puppies do Yorkies usually have in a litter, I'm sure it varies. | Even though you may have gotten off on the wrong foot with some, I think it's great that you at least came on here and asked before mating your dog with your cousin's.
You've already been given great advice so I won't add to it. I would say that it is your cousin that should be asking/researching. The majority of the risks/responsibilities are with the owner of the female, though the male's owner certainly shares in them.
While there are many uneventful whelps, you only need to scroll back through this forum to see the many heartbreaking things that can and do happen, even with experienced breeders. Breeding Yorkies can be immensely fulfilling but it is not a casual endeavor.
As a practical matter, with your cousin's girl being 3 years already, she would likely be too old to consider breeding by the time you both have enough background to competently undertake a mating. |
