Possibly having a large litter? I have a little girl (well not so little she weights 6 3/4 lbs. not preg.) who is due around Jan 29. This is her 3rd litter, her first litter she had 4 puppies and the second she had 3. Abby is already fairly big and she has about 3 weeks to go, so thinking she may be having a large litter. Is there anything special that I should be doing other than the normal prenatal care? Also, Is there any extra problems that can come from having a large litter? Most of the reading that I have done is for normal size litters and they don't really talk about large litters. I want to make sure that I am prepared for anything. We go to the vet on the 18th for an x-ray to find out how many to expect. I just know that Abby is already very uncomfortable and she usually didn't get that way until right before her delivery date. Thank you guys for all your great information. I learn so much from reading all the posts. I probably spend too much time reading all of them. haha:D |
Congratulations on your upcoming litter. I do pray all goes well. It is possible your girl will have more pups or they could just be larger pups. I have had that happen to me before when I thought a female was going to have a big litter and she would just have 3 or 4 larger pups in her instead of 5 or 6 smaller pups. Did you use the same male for this litter as you did for the other litters? As for your question about care of the expectant momma, I don't do anything any different if they appear to be carrying more pups. If they are really big I do use extra caution in making sure they don't jump around too much and I will help them to get on or off of the couch. Larger litters do sometimes require more intervention in assuring all the pups are getting plenty to eat. Over the years I have had several litters of 6 or 7 pups. You do really have to be very vigilant in making sure momma is eating plenty of food. Occasionally I would have a pup that would be smaller that I would have to make sure it was nursing and not getting pushed off. Sometimes you might also have to supplement the pups if mom does not have enough milk. |
Thank you for your reply. Yes it is the same male. He weights about 3 lbs. This last litter the puppies were bigger than the 1st. litter with 4, but all seem to end up the same size when grown. :rolleyes: I will certainly keep an eye out after the puppies are born. I tend to hoover making sure puppies are warm and eating, etc... |
Congrats on your litter! My Mia has had both 6 and 7 puppy litters! at one point just before her whelp date her tummy measured 21 inches! and gained almost 6 lbs. she went from 6lbs to almost 12lbs. They are a lot of work just like with any other litter! Just make sure mom is eating really good (healthy) and taking her vitamins. My vet is a huge believer of this to keep mom's strength up while she is nursing her puppies. keep in touch!:) and Good luck and safe whelping! |
Thank you for your wishes. What type of vitamins do you give your girl after her delivery? I usually don't give vitamins. Right now I am feeding her a mixture of Blue and Royal Canine puppy. It is the only puppy food she will eat. I just measured Abby's belly and she is 18" and has about 3 weeks to go. She is almost 7 lbs. not pregnant. |
The only supplement I give my mommas after delivering is the Doc Roy's Healthy Bones calcium supplement from Revival Animal Health Products. I give 1/2 tablet in the morning and 1/2 before bedtime. Sometimes I will give a bit of nutri-cal but not very often. As long as the momma is eating lots of high quality puppy food they should be fine. I add a little canned Pedigree Healthy Digestion or Chopped Chicken to the dry food. I know many people believe in using the whelping pudding but I have never found it necessary since my mommas are very good eaters and they usual gain weight while nursing. My nursing mommas always have food available and I make sure they eat a nice meal right before bedtime. |
Hi, the vet puts her on 1/2 tab of calcium pills and a all purpose tab at 1/2 tab:D knocking on wood! she and the pups have always come out completely healthy! |
I have never used the whelping pudding either, but have all the ingredience on hand in case we need it. Abby usually doesn't eat very well right after the puppies are born so do supplement with nuti-stat every evening. This ususally gets her appetite going after a few days. I also steam a chicken breast to add to her food as I know that she will eat this no matter what.:D I am getting so excited. I also have Happy Jack Milkade that I purchased last litter, but didn't use as she only had 3 puppies. Has anyone used this product? If I remember right this is a good source of calcium. |
My litter counts my grandma's, my mom's and my females have all had anywhere between 3 and 7 pups in a litter. its usually on the larger side of the numbers of pups for us. One litter that my grandma had, all of the pups were big in size. one of the pups eventually weighed in at 12 lbs at three years! |
