Need your thoughts on microchipping litter Hi, we have a litter (our one and only) of puppies from our male and female. I have been thinking of having them chipped before letting them go to their new homes. I feel I am responsible for the litter and that I owe it to the puppies to take every precaution in their safety. But is it better to let the new owners have it done when the pups are spayed and neutered? Would it hurt the puppies to have it done now, they are 5 weeks old now and would be 10-12 weeks old when I would actually have it done. So many new owners are full of good intentions, but never get around to it. I guess my question is would you as a new owner be open to the chip containing my information and it allready being in place when you pick up the puppy or would you prefer to have it done yourself. Also, can the chip contact information be changed to the new owners. Thank you in advance for your responses. Just want to do the best for the puppies. |
Usually the litter is chipped but not registered allowing the new family to register the chip when they pick up puppy. If you register puppy in your name...there will be another fee charged to transfer ownership. ''the chips are inserted via a needle...it's not a difficult procedure. |
I have all my puppies micro-chipped when I do their wellness check at 12 weeks when they go to their new owners. I always ask new owners to keep me as the second person to call--they could be in an accident--I will most probably still be here to be reached if the dog gets lost or wanders off. |
When we got our Mastiff the breeder chips all his litters. The chip info is his information so incase there is ever an issue he knows about it. We are the 2nd contact. He has all owners info and will contact the owners if he is called about one of his dogs. He told us one case where the people dumped the dog at a shelter and he drive 6hours each way to go and pick it up. |
All my litters are microchiped by my son, he is a vet tech, we do them at 12 weeks just before they go home. he has taught a few of my friends, he recomends a product called "Merrcuroclear" to clean and numb the area where the needle is going to be inserted, is a local anesthetic and antiseptic. the active ingredients are Benzalkonium chloride 0.13% first aid antiseptic and Lidocaine Hydrocloride 2.5% External analgesic. we also have the reader but you can have your vet, check the microchip when the pup goes for his exam. we use home again. hugs, Carmen in nj |
I got my puppy microchipped when I bought him...both pups I bought were not microchipped but I feel as it's my responsibilities to do so since they are mine. However, after reading other posts, I truly admire breeders who actually still care about their puppies well being after they are sold. I didn't feel the same with the breeders of my puppies...Anyways, the microchip I got allows you to change information anytime for free which is why I got it because I will be moving to University in half a year. I'm sure there are others similar to the one I got. If I were an owner buying a pup that is already microchipped, I would feel grateful. List it in the ad saying it's microchipped so people know. I know I intend on microchipping any puppies that Sasha has. It will happen when my vet says that it is alright to do so... I am finding that people that I have spoken to are relieved that I am doing this. For me it is important to do because: 1. The dog can easily be identified as having come from my girl, 2. If the family is no longer able to care for the puppy and decides to resale or surrender (which is against my purchase agreement) someone can id and call me, and 3. Most importantly it's a security measure that many people take for granted and don't think about having it done until it is too late. |
