Ears
 
So i notices with a lot of tinies..the ears tend to go up real early. With London and Sophie...both their ears were already up i think at 6 weeks old. So i was wondering...normally by what age should a standard sized yorkie's ears be up by if both parents ears are up? Does it depend on mom & dad's genes?

Im not a breeder but both of my yorkies ears were down when I brought them home and they were up by 12 weeks

Very dependent on each individual pup....and what is going on with their growth pattern, teething, testicles. How much hair wieght is on the ear, etc. Yes, some genetics come into play......It's also very dependent on whether and when a breeder steps in and offers assistance in helping those ears up.

I have been shaving my pups ears.. they are trying to stand. At what age do I step in and start taping?

They will be 6 weeks Wednesday. The base of the ears are up by the tips are still floppy. I think they are doing fine but wanted to make sure what age I should do this if they don't go up. I have only taped onetime and the puppy was over 12 weeks.

When they're that young I use Breath Rite Strips and surgical glue.....cut the strip in half with the apply some surgical glue on the sticky side.....with the wide side towards the bottom, just press it to the center of the inside of the ear......going up and down

Oh Thanks! I will do that.. as soon as I can get to the store. I am still a bit snowed in. My husband had to take his truck to work and he has never dug my suv out of the snow..:rolleyes: over 36" is to much for me to even consider trying to shovel.:eek:

Thanks!!! So if they are not up by...say 12 weeks...i would need to assist them to stand up? It's just a hassle for me..Teddy's ears never went up and he gets ear infections all the time. Meanwhile London's ears are up..and the vet said her ears are as clean and healthy as a whistle and also Sophie's ears were up and she never had ear problems either..so i prefer them to be up. And plus it's cute :p

Yep! Of course it's a hassle.....but, if you want ears that stand up that's what you need to do. Ear infections aren't predicated on floppy ears. Keep the ear canals free of hair (plucking) and use a cleaning solution with a drying agent. As a groomer, I've dealt with ear infections on yorkies with their ears up......just need to make sure the proper grooming procedures are taken to keep the ears healthy.
