Need Nightime Advice! My mom has been with her pups and sleeping with them since they were born. At first they were in a small room with a baby gate blocking the door.....and a while ago they got moved to a excersize pen in the main area of my house. Momma was totally happy to be in there at night. The past three night I have been up with mom whining and crying in the pen. Do I leave the pen open and let her come sleep with me which is what she wants....will she still wake up and go feed the boys in the middle of the night? What to do???? Why is she doing this when she's been a all night sleeper since 10 weeks old? |
How old are the pups? I am one who keeps mom and pups together. Others may do it different but this is what works for me. Maybe its the expen she doesn't care for if she isn't used to be confined? Could you move them all back to the gated room and she if that makes her happier? |
Yes how old are they? I don't make my moms stay in if they want out. Bvut they have never wanted to be out until the pups were old enough to go all night. Then I put food in for them to eat at night if they get hungry. If they are up and getting around, they are old enough to eat soft food. I start them on baby rice cereal and goats milk at 4 weeks. |
I agree with Breny. If she was more comfortable in the room you might want to try using it again. I use to raise pit bulls, and we'd build the pups a large square box out of wood. They couldn't get out, but the moms could easily get in, and out as they needed. They were happy with the arrangement, and so were the pups. Best wishes. |
I leave the door open so mom can go in and out at all times. If I close it she crys.. if I leave it open she is fine and sleep in there all night. This works best for me. |
Mrs. Laynee hates beinglocked up and now hates her whelping box....so she has moved her pups to her crate. i have a heating pad in her crate with a thick blanket and leftthe door open. on the outside of the crate is a dog bed that occasionally she will lay on at night away from pups. i guess they just need mommy time too. but i know she will jump in bed to lay with me (she misses sleeping with mommy) but WILL jump down to feed her pups if need be |
The momma should not be totally confined to a pen with she pups. She needs to be able to get away from them when necessary. I always have a board across the front of the x-pen so mom can go in and out. Your pups will still need to nurse during the night. I don't know how far your bedroom is from your living room but you and momma need to sleep within hearing distance of the pups. I always keep my pups in the spare bedroom that is right next to our bedroom so it is easy for me to hear them. My moms usually don't feel comfortable sleeping in a different room than where the pups are until the pups are about 8 weeks or older. Also, if you have other dogs in the house you have to make sure they do not have access to the pups unless you are 100 percent sure it is safe. |
Thanks for all the replies! I will try and answer all the questions that came up in order for you to tip me..... Before the pups arrived mom has slept in her crate since being a puppy herself. She was crate trained and spent her days free in the house and in the crate at night. She loved being in there and never woke up or whined. The pups are 4 and a half weeks old and I have started weaning them. The pups are not only up and around but play fighting and tugging on toys etc. The pen has a bed for the dog and pups...pee pads, toys and food and water. The pen is in my main area and my bedroom where mom wants to be is right next to the main area. She would hear them if they were yelping or whining. Thanks so much! EDIT: The reason I moved them from the room with baby gate is because that room belongs to my other dog. I moved her out of that room for the pups. But, that room was also by the garage so I didnt' want drafts and also my other dog kept going in there to sleep. I totally trust my other dog, no problem there. We have had her for 13 years and she is the most gentle dog in the world. My yorkie trusts her no problem as well. |
It sounds to me like you just need to make it where mom can get away from the pups when she needs to during the night, then she would probably sleep just fine. |
