Breeding Mentor in or around Southern Maryland Hello Everyone, I am really interested in breeding Yorkies one day and am looking to find a mentor in my area (Southern Maryland). Of course I have been and will continue to do my research, talk to breeders, read books, etc., but I truly believe that nothing teaches better than hands on experience. If there are any breeders in or around Southern Maryland, or anyone knows of anyone, who would be interested in taking me under their wing, please contact me. I don't know what is usually done in exchange (i.e. money, help with the dogs / puppies), but I am open to anything. Thank you! |
PM whispersmom(Rini), she's in MD and she's the best that money could never buy. |
Thank you! Thank you. While I have never met or spoken to her, I have heard her name many times, including from the breeder that I bought my Biewer as Rini has purchased Biewers from her as well. Thanks again! :D |
OH! silly me, I didn't notice the Biewers in your avatar...Did you get them from Michele? I would love to see more pics of them. I have two that are just delightful. |
Yes, I just have the one, so far. We just got her last Friday from Michele and she is such a doll. We just love her to pieces already! I'm not at my home computer right now and don't have my pictures saved on this computer, but I do have some more posted in my gallery if you would like to go there and see them. You have two Biewers? How many dogs do you have in all? How old are they? Got pictures? Sorry, I bet you didn't plan on playing 20 questions this early in the morning! :D |
WOW, and I've only had the first cuppa coffee...lol Yes, I have two Biewers, ummm 12 yorks, counting the two pups, a Great Dane, two Labs, a cat and three teenagers, one of whom wants...godhelpme a parrot. Ages range from 17yrs to 5 weeks. I hope I didn't forget anybody... |

Speechless I am COMPLETELY speechless. You are a BRAVE, BRAVE person! And I love that you went from one extreme to another with the Yorkies and then the Great Dane! Wow, I am going to be telling everyone about you and all that you have as everyone always teases me that I will have to buy a farm one day as I just love animals. Well I know one thing, if I ever need to learn how to mutitask and better manage my time, I'm coming to you for lessons! ;) |

I did have a farm, but chose the critters (2 and 4 legged) over the acreage and left that with the ex husband. |
Wow, I'm jealous! I would love to have a farm.....although all I really want is a horse. Definitely jealous of how well you handle everything, whether you are brave or crazy, or a little of both! :) Think you will give in and buy the parrot? By the way, what is your name? Mine is Jennifer, Jenny, Jen.....really depends on how much you feel like typing. :p |
It's Stacy...and here's a good point, I forgot to say welcome to YT AND you are new here and already have pics in the gallery. I've been here awhile and still haven't figured that out! |
I haven't decided about the parrot...my daughter had finches a long time ago and I had a parakeet growing up. The last time I gave in to a new pet, was baby dragons (anoles) from the renaissance fair, and after two weeks I was the one that fed them the damn live crickets for over two years 'til they finally went to lizard heaven. might be settling for parakeet. |
I don't know about the farm, or getting to carried away with too many animals, that includes reptiles, and rodents!!!! |
I always wanted a parakeet while growing up, but never had one. We did have two cockateils and two different times and then my parents had a cockatoo for years. I definitely like the bigger birds better as they of course are just more fun and able to do so much more. Unfortunately, the bigger the bird, the louder the noise they can make. I swear, when he was screaming you could hear him at the end of their long gravel driveway and that was with all of the windows and doors closed! On the flip side, he was by far the sweetest bird I have ever known. He wasn't much of a talker (only said Hello), but all you had to do was stick your hand in his cage and he would rub his head against it to save you the hassle of actually petting him. Oh, and don't mind the post by Culinary Pro there......that's my hubby.......and he's all talk when it comes to animals. He wasn't much of an animal person when I met him, but by the time I was done with him he was glued to Animal Planet and spouting off a list of pets he wants to have one day, which include an African Grey and a Monkey of all things! :) |

Wow !!.. god bless... Question: ages 17yrs to 5 weeks.. Is this your daughters or your dogs?? |
Sylvan parakeets are good birds we used to raise them and sell them to the pet store. They are very smart ours would be let out of their cages everyday they loved it they always came over and sat with us they can bite very hard though and draw blood, make sure you get a little one and not an adult. They are messy also like to throw food out of the dishes. We haad them for 6 years, easy to reproduce also if the conditions are right, we had the 3 colored parakeets.(yellow blue and green) |
I live in Southern Maryland too. I see you are in Waldorf. I'm in Calvert. I'm not a breeder, but have been thinking about it seriously for a long time. I've got two 10 month old yorkies. I love the breeder I got them from. He live around Baltimore, and has the most beautiful yorkies. |
Are the two beauties that you have brother and sister?? They are adorable! :) |

011011, Thanks also for parakeet info, my Skipper Blue was a great pet when I was a kid. I just really don't need anyone else to clean up after and that always seems to end up being my job in the end. waistful, who is the breeder your pups came from? JHurtt, is husband really a culinary pro? might have to invite myself for dinner. |
Yeah, he is...and a great one. Two problems with it though, the first is obviously that dinner is the busiest time at a restaurant, so of course he is rarely home to eat it, yet alone cook it. The other problem is that when he cooks, he is great at just knowing what to add. Then I will eat it and think it is just the best thing ever.....and he won't remember how he made it! :) I definitely can't complain though because I know most men out there are lucky if they can figure out how to cook a pop tart! :D |
yes they are brother and sister! Quote:
Let me know how it's going with your breeding aspirations!! You can e-mail me at tidd@comcast.net |
How much do mentors charge? I had a akc judge offer to be my mentor the other day. I didn't really take her to seriously. I don't have that kind of money, but do need advice. I have made some mistakes breeding and trying to fix them |
Mostly, a really caring, loving helpful mentor will do it for the love of the breed. There might be occasional expenses for travel or such, but I, frankly do not know how I could put a dollar value to mentoring. I would have been lost were it not for my mentor who abandoned me just to move to FL with her family..LOL Waistful, check your PM.. |
