How old is too old to sire a litter? I am curious about this too, since my silky sire is going to be 7 next september.. Carmen can you post this question on the groups and forums you belong to? I have searched all morning and cant find any information on: How old is too old for my male to sire a litter? My boy will be 8 years old when my new girl will be ready for her first breeding!I have concerns on his age. I don't want to run into any problems with him being too old and getting injured. He is a very healthy guy and had passed all his tests well, i had no problem with him ever. I would prefer my own male to sire our pups. Any though's on the matter? thanks, Carmen in nj Silkie Terriers and Princess Prada My beloved Pet Yorkshire Terrier |
AKC states 12 years old. After that you would have to have proof that the sperm is still active. You could check with your vet on his sperm counts if that concerns you. |
oh yes, I know what the AKC states, my friend is just concern about physical harm to her sire, I wonder the same, I had my sire sperm count tested before this litter and it is perfect.. thanks, Carmen in nj |

I'd be interested to know the question as to how old for a sire. I never gave it a thought because I thought for a male it's not a big deal if he's taken care of. My new pups was sired by an old dog. And, they are still studding him and studding him a lot so I'd be interested to know what kind of toll that takes on the male at an old age. Elaine |
I used one of my boys at 12 yrs and got 4 females..it was his last litter..and he had not been bred in 4 yrs. I like to retire a male at 8..but would use my own as long as I wanted...would not buy stud service from anything over 8..JMO |
