Identifying newborn puppies 2 Attachment(s) Hello everyone! Ok... so one of my females had FOUR puppies this morning. YAY!! She's a trooper! She had THREE girls and one boy. Here is my problem... all the girls look identical and are of approx the same weight. I know they say to tie a different color ribbon around the puppies necks to identify who is who... but I know Mama Dog won't allow that - she'll have it chewed if in less than 20 seconds. Does anyone have any other ideas on marking pups? Any help would me much appreciated! P.S. I'm attaching pics of my 5 yorkies, plus the newborn pics! :animal36 |
Maybe? I'm not a breeder Good Morning and congraulations on your new family, My firend has triplets and she puts a differnt color of nail polish on their nails. Maybe you could just put polish only on one of the nail but different colors. I'm not a breeder but it sounds like it might work..lol I would love to see yorkies born. Maybe one day, but mine...lol Good Luck, Your going to be a busy for awhile. Kathleen.. Mom To My Little Girls: Punken Pie Breese Be Be Lil Ol Tuffy RIP: |
I have done the nail polish thing with my pups, one toenail, on each pup. When I didn't have different colors, I just did different toenails on each pup. I used the safe for kids nailpolish and let it dry really well before putting them back with mom. Usually though, my pups are enough different that I can tell who is who. Good luck. |
An acquaintance of mine just had a litter of GSP pups (10 to be exact), and she use different color sting. So one had a red string, one blue, one yellow, so forth and so forth. She used it until they were about 5 weeks old and she could tell them apart based on markings. ;) |
I suggest the nail polish as well, you can use the blow drier to dry it faster, low temperature of course, and i do a small dot on the hair in the back or in a nail , not directly to the skin. Then in a few days i am sure you will be able to tell them apart, besides, if you have 2 females, you only need to put a mark on one... Great pictures !!!! Congrats, I am home bound watching my girl, she is about to deliver any day . I will start taking her temperature today , she has no appetite since yesterday, although she had dinner, could not care less for breakfast! i am working from home this week anyways. I never started a puppy watch thread here, may be this time... not so sure though ... XOXO |
I know a breeder that paints the nails |

I have not found a method that I am happy with. I tried nail polish on their fur but mom would have it off in 2 hours and I would have to keep applying it. Anything I have put on their necks has come off. I tried permanent marker but mom washed that off also |

could you do a dot of super glue on the fur, back on the butt , and then apply the dot of nail polish over it? it can be a minuscule dot just enough for you to see... just an idea ... |
Hey, you are only about 1 hour and 40 minutes away from me!! Congratulations on the new litter!! They are adorable as are your adults!! I would try different colored nail polish on one of their nails. As long as you make sure that it is dry before putting the pup back with mom, I don't see how she could bother it much. |

Colored Sharpies Congratulations on your new family. How fun!!!!! I use a different color of permanent marker. When they are teeny-tiny I use a dot on their belly, as they grow I swap to a dot in the ear for quicker/easier identification. When they are almost old enough to go to their forever homes, I switch back to the belly and use write their initial in their "color". When prospective moms and dads come to look at the pups, if I have more than one to show, I will put a color coded collar on them and take them off immediately after the "lookers" leave. |
Be very careful of with the nail polish; the fumes are really toxic. Someone just posted about this the other day. |

I'm just wondering: Why is it necessary to identify them so soon? Congrats on your new litter. They are adorable. :) |
