8 Puppies!!!! Help Hi all Marnie had her pups this morning... 8!!!!! 6 girls and 2 boys. She birthed well, it was very quick, and mum and pup are doing just fine. Im in England, and its very cold here at the moment, but mum and pups are warm. Any suggestions for anything additional to give mum with such a large brood? She is on 4 small meals a day (boiled chicken and stock with dry puppy biscuits mixed in) and also goats milk 4 x a day. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks Ann-Marie (in cold cold Manchester, UK!!) |
Wow, 8, ok, my girl had 5 on sunday the 22nd and she is eating 5 small meals a day with whelping puding and some small snacks in between, also one and a half pill of a calcium supplement, I suggest increasing her meals to at lest 5 a day, also adding a calcium supplement to prevent eclamsia. I do mix her kibble with a bit of goat's milk too. other than that, if she does not have enogh milk start supplementing the babies by bottle feeding them sometimes during the day, so they don't drain her .. is cold in New Jersey too.. I have a small electric Heather in the whelping room and a heating pad under the whelping box.. |

Oral Cal Plus Order this to keep on hand. Holding eclampsia at bay, so it never comes at all… forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it. Feeding her as much as she wants, and whatever she wants. Cheese, Cottage Cheese, Kibbles, a good puppy food |
marnies 8 pups! thanks for your replies... im getting some calcium tablets tomorrow. A bit confused here about not giving mum scrambled egg or calcium tablets if she is whelping????? Im going to give her a scrambled egg in the morning and some food with goats milk, and will feed her 5 small meals a day, which i think is sufficient. Marnie will let me know if she is hungary anyway!!! she has just had some steak, with a warm bowl of goats milk! the pups are all quiet, which is a good sign that they are fed and well. Im keeping an eye on the smallest so it gets its share of milk, but i was watching it crawl inbetween the other pups and get right to a nipple!!! (My last litter was only 2 weeks ago when they all left, another big litter of 7!!! Again a really tiny little boy, who ended up been the first to do everything!!! ie, crawl, eyes open, eat, toilet train etc. Ive never had such a big litter, but hoping to cope ok!! xx |

Wow sounds like you have some pretty prolific girls there. |
...i think i misread.... and didnt see 'prior to whelping' not to give supplements. Yes i will give her extra food and feed her 5 x a day. Ive just looked at her now she looks as if she hardly has any milk but the pups are full (their tummys are fat), Marnie is a lean girl anyway, but i coped ok with 7, im sure if i do the same caring as i did for them, then this 8 should be just fine! Will post some pics tomorrow! x |

Petsmart and Petco do have them. But, if you can avoid getting them there, good. They are very high priced. I get mine through Amazon.com. Better prices than Revival. |
