Please help.. In heat already? or vet time? I have a female that just whelped her babies almost 3 months ago. While I was grooming her today I notice that she is bleeding. Could she possible be in heat already??? Or could this be something else??? I can't find a vet near me that is open today. The closest one is 3.5 hours away. Any advice would be welcome. I will bring her in if she needs to go. I just wanted to see if anyone on here knows. ( I am still learning :) Thank you. |
Most females come in heat every 6 to 9 months but some can come in sooner or go longer. If she is coming in heat then she is a bit early. Is her vulva swollen? It the blood red in color? If in doubt to whether it is a heat cycle or an infection then it is best to get her checked by a vet. |
She is a new dog to me. It is a dark pink color. She seems to be swellen. |
It sounds like a heat cycle. Are you sure about the age of the pups of her last litter? If you have any males in the house then you will need to keep them away from her. |
I am not sure of the age of the pups.( I think almost 3 months) I tried to contact the previous owner and she is gone for the holiday weekend. I bought her from a breeder, (now after my research on here I wish I would have done more on the breeder. lesson learned the hard way) I do have a male but I am not ready to breed her yet. I already have my first litter due in Jan. I am not ready for 2 litters near the same time. I WILL be keeping her seperate from my male. I am still working with her to be a house pet. She is very sweet but I have to keep a close eye on her(potties all over) Thank you for the advise. I will keep a close eye on her. What should I look for in case of infection? |
It does sound like she is in heat, especially if she is peeing all over. When females come in heat they will mark just like a male. The only other thing that would cause a lot of peeing would be a urinary track infection. I am glad you are not breeding her now and that you intend to do a little more research. How old is this female? I do wish you the best of luck with your upcoming litter. |
Thank You. She is 2 1/2. I am glad to be able to sleep thinking she is just in heat:) I am anxious and nervous about my first litter. I have done a lot of research and watched but this in my first time on my own. Hands on is so much different. I have wanted to breed yorkies for a long time about 7 years ago was when I was first interested in it. But decided to wait until my human babies grew up (my youngest is 13 already) I know that yorkies take a lot of time and money. I am finally ready :) Thank you to everybody that is so helpful and full of information on here:) |
I take it that she was having problems on where to use the bathroom before you saw color? If it's a UTI you may see her walking around bearing down. If she's urinating every hour it's a concern. Some act like they are constipated. That's what you would look for. I think you are wise to wait to breed her. Giving her the gift of being a family member is special. Good luck w/ housetraining her. It's never too late to try. Good luck / your first liter too. |
