Babies leaving too soon question My neighbor is buying a Yorkie for her sister for Christmas. The breeder plans on letting the puppy go at 8 weeks. I told my neighbor this is too soon. The puppy will be alone all day, and he will be missing out on socialization from his mom and siblings. Everything I have read and heard say they shouldn't leave before 10 weeks. Can someone offer some advice to give her? She passed on my comments to the breeder, and now the breeder is offended! :eek: I didn't say anything rude. I just said that 8 weeks was too young, and I understand that she is in the business, but that the puppy's welfare should come first. ( I would hope that this is the reason most people are in the business, but I realize that is not the case :() The breeder said I don't know her and have no right to judge her, and that she would not let the baby go unless he was ready. Hmmmm. I don't agree. Thanks for your thoughts. |
Well, times have changed since I first started breeding. Back then it was common to sell pups at 6 to 8 weeks.:eek: While now I agree that it is best to keep pups until they are close to 12 weeks old, there are many people that do not understand the reasoning behind that. I know many people get pups at 8 weeks and they do just fine. What really scares me about your friend getting a pup that young is that the pup will be alone all day. I find that really sad. Please tell your friend that it is unsafe to leave a new pup alone that long. If she does get the pup she needs to make sure either she or someone else can check on the pup during the day. |
Sorry but besides the age of this puppy a reputable breeder would never let a puppy go into a home as a xmas present.:( |
No Good breeder would let their babies go home at 8 weeks, is so many things that can go wrong... I rather NOT sell than give a baby up at 8 weeks. My first priority is the security and health of my pups.. hugs, carmen in nj |

That being said, her sister lives alone, so, I don't think it would be the same situation. I do think that this breeder does not know this and isn't caring about about where this baby goes or when he leaves. Thanks for your replies! I forwarded them to my friend, and she is looking for another breeder! That poor baby (like many others) will still go somewhere way too soon.:( |
Well I might have suggested to my friend to ask the breeder if she could pick up the pup after the New Year - as I wanted to spend time with the pup without the distractions and busyness of Xmas. Then she could see what the breeder said in reply. When I picked up Razzle from my breeder on Dec 30th he was 11 wks old and she made sure we were going to be home for a few days and had time to introduce him to our other animals and see that he felt at home in his new surroundings. My point is giving some room for the breeder to respond in the appropriate way. Gail in Ontario |
I have an 8 week old kitten and we decided to keep it but if I were looking for her a home it wouldnt be that young. She just starting eating on her own at 7 weeks. That is just too young |
I mentioned that to her, b/c that was my first thought. Why not keep the baby a few more weeks? My friend thiks she might have offended the breeder, b/c she hasn't replied to her e-mails. We'll see how it goes. Quote:
