Mother has diaherra Okay, so Ellie delivered her puppies very early Saturday morning. She didn't eat any of the placentas but now has this terrible smelly diaherra. I have a vet appointment scheduled at 5:30 today, but was wondering if this common. Any advice is greatly appreciated. |
I had a female who after whelping experienced terrible diarrhea and the vet gave me FortiFlora. It really helped her. I gave it to her for 5-7 days. FortiFlora Gastrointestinal tract conditions such as diarrhea are commonly seen in pets and are often associated with an imbalance in the intestinal microflora. Restoring microflora balance is a key component of the effective management of these conditions. FortiFlora is a nutritional supplement that contains a probiotic, Enterococcus faecium SF68, for the dietary management of pets with diarrhea. This probiotic has been shown to be safe, stable, and effective in restoring normal intestinal health and balance. This unique supplement contains guaranteed levels of live active cultures in a digestible protein base. Sprinkle 1 packet on a pet’s food daily for 30 days to achieve optimum intestinal health. It tastes so good it can be used to entice your pet to eat! |
Thank you so much for responding. I will update everyone after the vet appointment. By the way, I apologize for the spelling errors. |
We just got back from the vet. When I took her she started vomiting. He gave her a shot to settle her stomach, some IV fluids, antibiotics and some anti-diarrhea medication. He also said if she's not better by tomorrow we have to bring her back. |
Is she feeling better now? Tayah had bad poo from the whelping pudding. It upset her tummy bad. |
I think that's what happened to Ellie. She's not wanting to eat much but she is taking the nutri-cal pretty good. The doctor said that I needed to get some calories in her. I cooked her some rice she ate just a little. I gave her some yogurt, she ate just a little. She ate some beef liver but not much. She's just not acting herself right now. She also got a bath, she smelled so bad. |

So sorry.....I hope your girl is feeling better now, mine got sick from eating the whelping pudding after giving birth |
I've never had a problem with the whelping pudding. Either with my moms or when I've used it on my pups when weaning.... However, they have had stinky poops and diarreah from diapering pups,......Usually straighten it up with Pepto....and Benebac....same as Forti Flora......probiotic......I administer a 1/2 tube to my newborns before putting them to mom........ |
Well so far the puppies don't have it. I just pray that she will get better soon. She seems to be doing much better now. I think the fluids that they gave her helped. I also gave her some pedilyte when I got home. |

My Go-Go on her last litter went down on me when the pups were a week old.....Ran her ER.....they diagnosed eclampsia.....administered IV fluids and Calcium....next day vomiting.....ran her to Vet's, everything normal with her blood count......normal temp, etc. but, dehydrated, and slightly anemic....kept her and administered IV fluids, all day long.. during the day she developed a foul odor......more blood, sonogram, you name it they did it.....administered mega doses of antibiotics....after 3 days finally stabilized her.....I asked for a spay at that time, they had run a coagulation test and her count was low, so she would have bled to death on the table. Brought her home with a month supply of mega doses of antibiotics... 2 months later when she went in for her spay (5 yrs old and last litter) they found that her horn was ripped........sonogram or x-rays couldn't reveal it. |
That is so scary Mary. Ellie is doing much better today. She ate some breakfast of scrambled egg and cottage cheese. She has so much milk. The vet told me to watch for milk fever and eclampsia. Babies are continuing to do well. Discharge is normal. Hopefully everything is alright now. |

One product I always keep on hand diarrhea is a product I get from Revival called Diarsanyl. It seem to work very well. Anyway, I am certainly glad your momma is doing better. |
The vet did check her stool sample yesterday and it came back negative. He checked for everything. The vet just called me to check on her too. I explained that she seems to be acting fine. She was even playing with me this morning. I wonder if it could have been where we took her off of the puppy food and have now put her back on it. She has always had a sensitive stomach. |
It could very well be diet related. I never change up the diets in my new mommas. They get the same foods all the way through pregnancy and after pregnancy. All I add after the pups are born is the calcium supplement. I just make sure the moms get more food. |
I will definitely keep that in mind in the future. I appreciate everyone's help. |
