Belly Dropped Okay, so her belly has officially "dropped" as of this morning. She's not due until Tuesday, but the vet said that it could be anytime now. I was wondering what the general rule is after the drop can you expect puppies? I have been monitoring her temps which are listed below: Monday night - 100.2 Tuesday morning - 100.4 Tuesday night - 100.4 This morning - 100.3 She gets so angry with me taking her temp. She wants to be right beside you all the time and have you rub her belly. According to the vet, the x-rays shows 5 puppies, but I can only see 4. Please let me know what you think in regards to belly dropping. |

You're taking her temperature much too soon....I'd wait until her due date....you're stressing her out and you need to keep her as stress free as possible...... |
Thanks Mary. I will stop doing it then. She weighs in at 6.5lbs before pregnancy. I am thinking she is going to go this weekend. |
I'd always read that you should be taking the temperature several days before her due date to be keeping track of her temp (plus, you never know when she could have them- possibly early, though not likely with a first litter). My girl didn't mind me doing it though, or at least didn't act distressed in any way. So yes, maybe it's different for different dogs; the last thing you want to do is stress her out. My gir'ls belly had dropped approx. 2-3 days before delivery. But the temperature was also on it's way down at around that same time. I noticed your girl's temp. hasn't dropped significantly yet, though I've been told sometimes it doesn't always do this. My vet told me not to rely on the temperature drop, as it doesn't always happen. You never know, I guess. Every dog is different. |
She doesn't get stressed, just doesn't like me doing it. I will leave her alone though. I know all the other signs to watch for, just wondering how much longer I would have to wait. I don't want them early, but I am getting excited/nervous/anxious, all the emotions that you could think of. My husband is with her during the day while I am at work. He knows what to look for too. He's going to call me if anything happens before I get home. I hope she at leasts waits for the weekend. |
Aw, I'm excited for you! I hope everything goes well. :) |

Taking temp can at times be an indicator....but if you're taking it, the temp must be down for 24 hours to be an indicator that she'd getting ready to whelp. So, that would mean your taking it 4 to 8 times during a 24 hour period.....and then what it fluxuates up and down..... Now here's my experience with temp taking.....I don't.....none of my girls temps have dropped prior to whelping....so, I just don't do it, keeping stress to a minimum and just leaving them alone......What I do is monitor them very closely for changes in their personalities....staring out into space...pacing, scratching......watching their bellies...I've seen a girl begin contractions while she was asleep. The day before their first due date.....bellies are shaved as well as her private area.....they are bathed in a good medicated shampoo, nails are cut and any quick leg trimming to make sure a pup doesn't get strangled in the coat..... |
I am planning on giving her a bath tonight. Her belly is shaved, but some of the hair is starting to grow back rather quickly. I am going to just trim it up a little tonight to make sure everything is nice and neat. I will keep you guys informed. Hopefully, we still have some days to go. I don't want them to come too early. |

Good Luck |
Thank you so much. I appreciate everything and take it close to heart. I will definitely be using the medicated shampoo. I will update everyone as soon as something changes. |
