Hi Tammy. I haven't been doing the temp thing....I am home all day now and everyday till this happens so I figured I'd save her the stress and just watch her actions instead. I will say that I kinda regret not taking it though just because I read about temps going too low....I wonder if it's too late to start taking it....comparison wise? |

Hi Marc I took Tiffany's temp using an infrared Thremometer. Very fast and made for the ear. Since I have always "played" with her ears she couldnt have cared less. So no stress! The down side was I didnt find temp readings all that helpfull. I knew it was time because all of a sudden her behaviour was "OFF", just suddenly very quiet....different....off! We went straight to the whelping area. Almost immediatly she started serious nesting and growling! Good luck! Ralph |
Hi Marc it is me again! I dont think you said if you are doing this alone or not. But my recommendation is to have another pair of hands handy for those unexpected moments. Tiffs last pup was very small and had a VERY short umbilical cord. I clamped it with a hemostat and cut it with scissors. (Boy if you can find suture scissors they work a lot easier!) But if someone hadnt been there to hold Tiffany It would have been impossible. Linda also tied it off. I was holding the pup and the clamp so as not to put any undue stress on the chord! When things start to go wrong it happens very fast and another pair of hands is priceless! |
Hey there Phoenix! I have my vet's emergency and cell number as well as his assistants cell number. If it starts during the day then they are minutes away. If it's at night then they are about 15 or so. |
that is very true, another set of hands is wonderful, I had my youngest son there and it was wonderful, and my vet tech son on call, but I still got Nervous when she started whelping.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

Still no signs of any labor. Today would be day 63. How much over is normal? I just worry that the pups are going to be too big if she takes too long. |

As far as leaving your house since Monday....don't plan on leaving after the whelp.....and least not for any great length of time and making sure someone is with her and the pups. I remember my very first breeding....took my girl with me to my mentors....Said I'm here until she whelps......You entrusted me with this gorgeous bitch and I'm not taking her life into my hands......well we stayed from day 58 of her first to day 63 of her 2nd.....We were scheduled to leave on the following morning to a dog show....As we sat and watched her and watched her, she gave us no signs......at 9 at night on day 63, the biggest contraction went through her body......she'd given no signs that whelping time was here......she whelped 3 puppies in 3 hours.......So, being prepared is wonderful, but each whelp is different with a different set of events....some not even in the books. |

I was just like you when I was waiting for Livi to have her babies....I was sooooo nervous!! I had no idea that I was about to stress and worry even more. It's like Mary said, be prepared to be stuck at home with those precious little beings. I did not leave Livi or her baby until he was 6 weeks old (I probably waited longer than what I needed, but we went through a lot with these babies). The first outing, I was VERY VERY stressed and worried....and that was just to ride with my husband and children to pick up a pizza and a few other things. We were gone one hour that time and I can't tell you how fast I ran to my bedroom to check on Livi and S'mores once we got back. ;) You will be fine....I feel for you because it wasn't too long ago that I was going through what you are. I think my daughter giving birth was less stressful than Kalina because my daughter had well-trained doctors and nurses right there with her the entire time. Poor Kalina only had me and I was VERY nervous. :) |
