Help! what to do with new puppies! We are getting close! So a quick couple of questions and it may sound silly but I am not sure what to do. All these what ifs keep popping into my head! Once the puppies start coming do you leave them with mom or do you get them out of the way for the next deliveries? If We have to run to the vet with mom for help (C section or other complication) do we bring the pups with her or leave them in the welping box? Thanks! |

I have a wicker basket next to the box with a heating pad on it and i put the babies there while she is whelping the next, I do put them back with her between contractions, their sucking promotes colustrum production and contractions. If We have to run to the vet with mom for help (C section or other complication) do we bring the pups with her or leave them in the welping box? I take all the pups in a box with a warm water bottle to keep them warm..you take the pups everywhere mama goes.. |
How close is she to delivering? I cut the cord ansd leave the puppies with mom until the next one starts to come, then I put them into a little box with a heating pad under it to keep them warm. Once the next one comes, put babies back with mom. I have never had to take mom for a C sectuion, but I would think take them along. Not sure though. Good question. |
Thanks Carmen! We are going a little nuts here with anticipation. You start second guessing yourself so a calm voice of experience is appreciated! Sincerely yours Ralph and Linda (and Tiffany) |

And as far as taking the puppies in with the mom in case of a c-section. Yes, definitely take them! That way you can get them checked out since you'll be there already. Good luck! I'm in the same boat as you, we should have puppies this weekend. It's exciting!!! :) |

Breeders please comment on what setting you should have for the heating pad. I know a breeder that killed the puppies because she had it set at high. |
This is day 61 to 66 depending on when conception occured September 2-7) |

Stella I am following your progress as well! The suspense is killing me! I am at work and Linda is home with Tiff but she really is my little girl! I am not getting ANYTHING done here! I wish you all the best with your mom and her delivery! Take Care Ralph |
My husband and I whelp our litters in a large wicker dog bed that we lay on top of our bed. The dog bed is completely covered with bedding and we use the disposable bed pads on top of the bedding. We make the room temperature pretty warm and there are no drafts. We leave the pups in the basket with the mom after they are born but we have a soft fleece blanket that we cover the pups with. When the mom starts to have another pup we will move the other pups to the other side of the basket and cover them with a fleece blanket. Between pups being delivered I do let the pups nurse. Once all the pups are born then I move the momma and her babies to an awaiting whelping box that has the heating pad covering half the whelping box. |
