when to start vaccinations on puppies My puppies are 7 wks old and I was wondering when I should start vaccinations? I heard that they need to be weaned 10 days prior to the first shot? They are almost weaned. Any thoughts on 5 way versus distemper and parvo modified live? Thanks |
I start mine at 6 weeks. The shot is called Max 5 the puppy shot. |
Are your puppies weaned before you start vaccinations? What about worming. |
There is a wide varying of opinion on this subject. It is now recommended that pups should not get any vaccinations before they are 8 weeks old. I prefer to wait until the pups are at least 10 weeks old and I give distemper and parvo only. |
Mine are semi weaned. They still eat from mom but occasionally eat her food. I let mom decide when to wean her puppies. I start worming at 4 weeks and sometimes 6 weeks since I keep them till 12 weeks on up. |

When worming what do you recommend? |

It's true that the minimum I could buy was 25 doses, but it was still less expensive than going to the Vet considering that I gave boosters to Matty and Kalina. My puppies were tested for worms and found negative, so I didn't do the worming. |
I never worm my puppies because they have a fecal check and I've been very lucky that I've never had a problem with worms. I do not worm unless it's warranted. Donna |
My vet starts them at 8 weeks |

I recommend taking a stool sample in of the pups when they are around 6 weeks old or sooner if they start experiencing loose stools. If the mom has been outside or has had hookworms in the past then you need to get the pups stools checked at 4 weeks. Coccidia is common with many puppies so even if the pups check negative for worms you still need to make sure they are negative for coccidia. Coccidia can sometimes be hard to detect unless the pup is actually shedding the coccidia, so again, if a puppy starts having icky stools, it should be taken to the vet immediately. Albon is needed to treat coccidia. |

Worming can start at 5 weeks but I agree with you not necessary if there are no loose stools. I also get my Vaccine from Revival. |

My dogs never leave home, and when at the vet I carry them so the likelyhood of them picking up worms is very rare. |
