How Much Nutrical is too much? I posted over in emergencies but did not get any replies. The vet said to give my very sick 15oz puppy who is 6 weeks 4 days 1CC of Nutrical every 4 hours. This seems like a lot. any advice? |
I am so sorry your baby is sick. I cannot advise on how much is safe. I have just heard that if you give too much over a long period of time that it can make them more susceptible to hypoglycemia. What is wrong with your baby? |
I would follow the advice of your vet. I am sure they looked up this information and it is also on the bottle. it is dosed mg/kg or mg/lb. When babies are really sick they usually get a higher dose than just a vitamin supplement will get. |

I am not new to puppies I have just never ben told to give that much to a puppy that small. I worry it will make his sugar to high. |

I am giving him water with chicken baby food and Nutrical. Small amounts often. I am going to go feed him again. I'll be in bed by 12:30 up at 230 430 and im up for the day at 6am I'll keep him well fed through the night and if he is not much better we will be back at the vet when they open. He is to small for all of this. |

1cc is 1ml of nutrical; it's not too much; but i really don't use nutrical. i add halo multivitamin to the food; and also if u are feeding the baby food; they have sugar in there so that should help with the blood sugar. however u should invest in a good multivitamin u can add to the food. i feed my dog the honest kitchen; which a great human grade food; check it out www.thehonestkitchen.com good luck |
I think 1CC is only 1/5th of a tsp. That's not very much! Watch out with the Flagyl - it causes loss of appetite, which is something you don't want right now. |
1cc IS equal to 1/5 of a teaspoon ( I am a nurse for humans and mixed meds in ICU all the time). It is not a lot. I hope your pup gets well soon. |

He still really doesn't want to eat but the blood is improving. I gave him rebound and he gagged, poor baby. |

Well 450$ later (for today ) and there is no real answer. Several fecals were done. A snap test for Giardia as well. Full physical, heart great, lungs great, gums, ears, eyes, all perfect. He ended up guessing and giving us flagyl mixed with a vitamin. and Panicure of all things because he said if it were giardia that would kill it.. tonight I am frustrated but other than being very tired my babies look pretty good. |
I'm glad everything is fine. I went through something very similar with my puppies weeks ago and that's why I mentioned the force feeding. They were fine until mommie weaned them at 6 weeks - then they decided that they wouldn't eat. I force fed them by syringe the prescription dog food but that caused diarrhea. Vet gave them flagyl, caused them to REALLY not want to eat - it was a vicious cycle. We did testing for EVERYTHING twice by two different Vets and everything was negative. Tomorrow they will be 11 weeks old and they are crazy and wild and doing great. I think that keeping their tummys full (even though it was against their will) was the best thing I did. They are so stubborn! |
