The vet wont see us??? I am sooo confused! I tried to set up an appointment for a palpation, but they kept tellingme they can't do anything! I have to wait for her to be 48 days and then they will do an x ray??? I don't know what to do. I dont know what's the right questions to ask? Should I just keep calling vets??? Do I need to explain in a clearer way? Or do only special vets know how do a palpation. And even if that's so, shouldn't they tell me I can do an ultrasound??? So far I have called four different vet offices. is this normal? should i just wait til the date the vet wants us to come in and just do an xray? |
I'm surprised they wouldn't give you an option for an ultrasound, but how far along is she? I will be going in for an x-ray just weeks before she delivers; it's too early to do that now as the pups haven't developed their bones, therefore, an x-ray wouldn't be able to detect anything if it's too early. So that explains why they couldn't x-ray, but as far as an ultrasound goes, my vet told me they could do that for me. As far as palpatations, I don't know of many vets who do that. Any acutally...I didn't think that was a good thing to do. I could be wrong, but depending on how early she is, that might not do anything for her (they wouldn't feel anything either). Let me also add that you want to have an x-ray done close to the time she delivers anyway; so yes, I'd recommend waiting so that you can clearly see how many puppies to expect and whether or not one or more of her puppies may be too large (and possibly cause complications during delivery). |
I never have mine palpatated. I take her to the vet for check-ups and he tells me everything I need to know :) Some breeders do this to their own little darlings but I never had. Is there a reason you need to know for safety reasons? ie... your girl is very small and you need to know how many pups? Otherwise I wouldn't worry to much about it. Then again, I haven't had any issues with Hannah delivering w/ any complications. She is 5lbs but throws very tiny babies when born. |
I just want to add that you really shouldn't take them in for xrays til they are at least 58 days. At 48 days the bones aren't calcified and you could possibly be told she isn't pregnant even if she is. |
At 30-35 days we do an ultrasound. We do an xray on day 59. I'm afraid if you do the xray too early, you might not get accurate information regarding the number of puppies and sizes--can they pass through the horn and out easily. |
I also do ultrasound on mine at day 28-30. 30 is better because sometimes at 28 days, the count is off. |
Thank you for your advice. I am still very confused as to what I should do. If little puppies are growing inside of her today should be day 26. I just wanted to know if she is pregnant or not. If she was I wanted to start buying things and getting ready. I don't want to wait for the last minute. Should I just go ahead and do the ultrasound then? Then the xray? Or should I just wait for the xray? Would the ultrasound be able to pick up the baby even if it was just one? |
My vet palpates her early on and we have fun with guessing how many of which sex, etc., HOWEVER we still do an x-ray a week before her due date to be sure. It seems to me through my experience around here that you need to find an old country vet to do a palpation. The newer/younger vets don't talk about it or even try to guess at the number of pups that way. It also seems that my very experienced country vet is always right! |
Does anyone know they price of an ultrasound? I know everyone's vet is different and was trying to get an idea. I don't think mine even does them. I would have to travel to a bigger office. |
I think I paid $90 |
Personally, I would not bother with having a bitch palpated. It is stressful taking a possibly pregnant momma to the vet and putting her under all that stress could effect her unborn fetuses. I like to practice patience. I treat any bred female as if she were pregnant. I make sure they have a quality diet and I try to avoid anything that would stress them out. Of course some breeders feel strongly about having an x-ray about a week before the pups are due but I have never found that necessary. |

Ultra sound cost my Vet charges $ 25.00 for an ultrasound it used to be $20.00 good luck, I would do the ultrasound if it's cheaper than the xray. Call around and check prices. one vet in my town charges $ 90.00 for the ultra sound. |
 Thak you everyone. I called around today and got some very interesting ultrasound information. I finally settled on a vet simply based on how nice ther person who answered the phone was. :D The vet visit will be 48 dollars and the ultrasound will be 58.50. The highest price I was quoted from another vet was 300, because they use a traveling vet to do the ultrasounds (which i think is strange since I live in the big city, wouldn't it be better business if you had an ultrasound machine?). So on Friday at around 5 pm, if everything goes well, I'll know if my little one is gonna have babies! My bf asked me, "can't we just buy her a pregnancy test for 10 bucks?":D I excited I dont feel so dumb anymore.. thank you again! |
We are just on day 24 soooo I guess I will just wait for a xray on day 55. I am a firm believer in xray. I think a little stress on the female having a xray is better than having on huge single getting stuck. |
gosh here in the Houston area an x-ray at my vet was $125 for one view and I would have to go to a different vet for the ultra sound at a price of $250- I know it's really cheap cost of living here but obviously not when it comes to VET Bills Good Luck with your little Momma- wishing her all the best |
My vet charges $45 for an xray but he does not do ultrasounds. I just called another clinic and they told me an ultrasound would be $90 plus $40 office call. They told me to call after lunch but said they had to be 40 days for the ultrasound but she wasn't sure. If that is the case I will just wait. |
She's having babies!!!:D Imma be a grandma at 26, doesn't that sound awsome! The vet said it looked like 3 to 4 little ones and I've already set up the x-ray appointment for nov. 4th. |
congratulations |
