Can a 12 week have collapsed trachea? You all might remember that I rescued a 7 week Yorkie from a horrible breeder about 5 weeks ago. She was covered with fleas and had very low blood sugar. I rushed her into Food Lion and got some Karo Syrup and gave it to her. The following morning I took her to the vet where they gave her some flea treatment and a shot of B12 since she wasn't eating. Well about 3 days after that visit she developed a cough. The doctor has been treating her for kennel cough. Our first medicine was albon and hydrocodine. Then the second medication was albon and Torbutrol. Well, now she is on amoxicillin, temaril, torbutrol, and chloreniramine. The vet said that if all of this medication doesn't work, he's going to have to x-ray her for pneumonia. He also said that it could be a collapsed trachea. However, she isn't coughing or acting like a collapsed trachea. I was wondering if they could get that this early. Any advice on how to treat this other than the steam of humifiers, and the medication is greatly appreciated. I just want her to start getting better. By the way, she doesn't act like she is sick at all. She barks, plays and everything. |
I am sorry your baby has been through so much. It does not sound like collapsed trachea if she has not been coughing or honking. What are her symptoms? Kennel cough does take a lot of time to recover from. Often, when they are on lots of medications they can develop other problems also from the side effects of all the medication. You might want to do a little research on perhaps some natural remedy that may help her. Here is one link with some good information. Without seeing her and knowing exactly what her problem is it is hard to advise. You might consider a different vet too if your current one is not able to properly diagnose her. Some vets just guess about the proper treatment needed and they are often wrong. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. Natural Treatments for Kennel Cough |
Thank you so much. I will definitely go and research this. I actually trust this vet, more than any others that are in my area. I am supposed to let him know if she's still coughing by Monday. It sounds like a hacking cough. Like she has mucus cought in her throat. |
They can be born with Collapsed trachea no age is too young, I'm confused is the pup coughing or not? If the pup is coughing then the Vet should of taken an xray a long time ago instead of medicating the pup so much and it would of probably been cheaper then spending money on all those meds and the pup wouldn't be so miserable. Kennel cough is a cough but I'm still not sure if the pup is coughing? If the pup isn't coughing then what are the symptoms that it has to be given so many meds? I would go to another vet, it doesn't sound like yours is too concerned. JMO |
