There have been some studies suggesting that giving calcium supplements during pregnancy can induce eclampsia. When you give a supplement the body, (sensing abundant amounts) slows down the process of making it on its own. So giving calcium supplements prior to whelp can lower the dams natural ability to absorb it. I will give calcium to a lactating bitch if she has a large litter or I see any sign of eclampsia coming on. I am speaking of things like tums or actual calcium tablets. Not adding natural foods to the diet. |
Pat (Primrose) had a female with a larger litter and the bitch had a really serious bout with eclampsia. Had she not been right there and head to the vet PDQ, that mom would have died. She had seizures, a temp of about 107, and was really sick....I use crushed oyster shell in an amount to assure 200 mgm of elemental calcium daily. When the whelping is done, I add enough to provide and additional amout of elemental ca tso that mom is getting 2-400mgm in their food and the supplement. I sometimes use yogurt insted, grated parmesan cheese, or cottage cheese but they are not particularly fond of that.. |
