Is this normal this soon? Lacey's puppies are not even a week old and she is spending less time with them. She is still very protective of them and she checks on them often but she does not stay in the box or even same room. Even if I lock her in the room with them she will lay outside the box. I will hear them cty and she will just look at them and then ignore them.... Kind of like when a mom knows when her kid is really in need of help or just getting frustrated. Is this normal this soon? |
Yes, it is normal. The pups are not nursing quit as often and mom knows when it is feeding time. She will want to start spending more time away from the babies. |
Kalina was the exact same way and I worried too. But every time I weighed them they were gaining very nicely and they always seemed fat and well fed, so I didn't worry so much after a while. |
puppies cry puppies cry because they are cold or hungry do you have a heating pad for them? at 1 week old I would be concerned also. Does she have enough milk? could be her milk supply is low, I use happy jack milkade good luck with them, keep us informed please. |

Thank you!! No I do not have a heating pad. It has been very warm here and I have the vent closed to their room and it is very cozy in there. Today they are whinning less. She does go in to nurse and she checks on them often. I think she is so use to attention that she does not like being alone. The puppies are gainning weight and are round. I do feed her several times a day and I make her a scrambled egg and add 2 tsp of plain yougart daily. I will continue to watch her. |

Everything might be fine, but I would be careful and maybe talk with the vet over the phone. I am very cautious because of a recent tragedy with my own momma. |
I find my Mamas stay with babies nonstop for 3 days, and then gradually feel secure enough to leave them for longer periods of time. Mamas that are a touch spoiled tend to only do what it takes to have the pups survive, and prefer to be with the family. |
Mine do the same thing mostly. One of them would stay with her babies for a year if I let her but the others all start to gradually want more and more time away. It's normal. |
Thank you fro all your replies. Lacey did stay with them continueously for the first 5 days and she slowly started to spend less time with them. I was wondering if she was missing the constant attention that she usaully gets. Anyways the puppies are all gaining weight on a daily basis. They are now 11 days old. I will have to my husband help post pics. |
