think i posted this somewhere else but here goes again because i need all the imput i can get because im a nervous wreck my female has started her second heat approx 8 to 9 days ago my male has been licking her and humping her like crazy at first she would sit down or lay down lol but yesterday she is letting him go at it just standing there ive even noticed her tail go up or to the side after a few seconds of my male humping her and kinda growling he gets off so i reached out to the breeder that i purchased my male from she instructs me to hold my female and try to have somebody else help my male kinda find his mark maybe he is having problems because he is so small in size he is only 3.5 pounds ok so i do this and my girl does not fight this and moves her tail to the side and to my surprise my male will not hump her i leave them alone and he starts humping her again :confused: any clues or ideas you can give me will be intensely appreciated

Please make sure your female is old enough. In one of your posts awhile back in June, you stated that your female was was only 8 months old ( I could be mistaken but I think thats what it said. ) If so, 11 months is way to young to breed. If she is old enough, you can put a pillow behind her for the male to stand on ( if he can't reach) and hold the female. You can also put ky jelly on the female to help the male slip in better.

This is just what my male would do. He was also small and quite a bit shorter than my girl. He seemed intent to try to get the job done himself without help. I could hold my girl, but he did not want any hands on him or he would just stop doing his thing and try to get away from me. He was obsessed with her any other time and always loved attention so I think he just wanted to get away so he could reapproach without interference.

I let him keep trying on his own, while I was right there with the girl. She was very receptive once it was time. The first time, I was convinced that he never tied even though he tried a LOT. He was penetrating but not staying in long. To my dismay, my girl got pregnant and had a litter of 4. The second time around, he seemed to be able to get the job done on his own a little better and tied 3 times with many more attempts. Once he tied and I could see they were really "attached" I could hold him a bit, or at least have hands on him, ready to make sure he did not try to pull away too quickly. She had a litter of 5 that time.

I know it is recommended to have a person hold each to ensure no one gets injured, but I had to give my male a little leeway at least til he was "tied." I was ready though to take control if it looked like trouble. This is my least favorite part of breeding, aside from the chance you take with the mother's life that is. I really felt invasive to get involved in their "act." But you do what you gotta do.

EDIT TO ADD -- just read the post above mine. If she is actually only 11 months old, I would really not want to breed her either. 11 months would be early to start a second heat, but it could happen. It is usually recommended to wait until at least the 2nd heat AND 18 months old. It's one of those things like puppies are usually ready to go to new homes when at least 12 weeks old AND 2 pounds. So, if she is in the 2nd heat but less than 18 months, I would wait til the 3rd heat. Just another opinion along the same lines.

I posted this in the thread you posted in of mine earlier....I am not expert but when I put mine together he took NUMEROUS attempts before they stuck...I mean like half an hour or more later did it finally work. Is your male way bigger or smaller than the female?

I also paid the vet to do bloodwork and tell me her good days.....with that I had the option of AI if they didn't tie. They did tie two times on two different days so I didn't need the AI.

What if you leave them alone in a room with more privacy for a long time? You think that would help or he just isn't into it at all?

Also, you noticed the swelling but is she done the bleeding part? Is she onto the next phase?

thank a bunch to you gals but i now have two females and the one in question will be two on xmas eve i am waiting for my other female to be a bit older but thanks a bunch your concern and i am totally welcoming any comments questions or ideas that might help me out even as a write this i can see him trying and shes standing there while hes kinda growling a bit i guess giving her a bit of dirty talk lol but after a few seconds hes off again how long do you think the window of opportunity is?

From what I am learning...someone will correct me if I am wrong....the heat starts with the bleeding and somewhere around the 10th day that will change to a clearish pinkish discharge at which point she is ready for breeding. I do believe the best days are from day 10 to 13/14....

I picked up my male on the 9th day and they had ALOT of happy intercourse...she was just turning to discharge....they tied on the 10th day in the morning....and they tied on the 11th day in the morning.

Do seperated them for periods of time as well. Once mine tied I had them apart for the remainder of that day and night.

okay, heres what I do. My males do the same thing. They will not let me help them so I stand right over them instead of touching as soon as the tie happens, I quickly drop to the floor and get hold of both of them to hold them still.

I have always been told you had to train your stud dog. Mine is now almost 3 and when I sit down and pat the girls back he knows what to do. For over a year he would not do this and I was so frustrated. I would never get a tie I don't think if I didn't sit right there and help. With a male that small your going to have to start training him to let you help.

I'm sorry, but this is VERY bad advice. :thumbdown You should NEVER allow a female and male to tie unsupervised! This is something any knowledgeable breeder is aware of and will tell you. I find it quite disturbing that this is even being suggested by another breeder when it could result in injury to both the male and female. :( I think a good rule of thumb would be to not advise other on situations that you have stated you are having difficulty in handling yourself.

That is not what I meant at all. What I was suggesting is that she give them a little more privacy by giving them a larger room and like I told her elsewhere....keep the door open just enough so that they think they are alone but you can watch and enter as needed. This of course only works if you don't need to assist the pair in tieing. I had my eye on mine the ENTIRE time and entered the second they tied.

Also, I never said I had difficulty with this for myself. What I said was that I tried the gate idea and it didn't work for my pair....so I put them in a larger room and gave them the feeling that they were alone.

I looked back over your posts and never saw where you 'told her elsewhere' to watch and enter as needed. You suggested to "leave them ALONE in a room." So it was easy to misunderstand, both for myself as well as this new breeder looking for advice.
Several other breeders, with years of experience, have explained that is NOT recommended. Hopefully the OP will heed their words of caution. :)

I appreciate the concern over my wording. My error...however, the OP is well aware of watching, helping and holding, I can assure you :)

I certainly hope that the OP is aware--she has gotten some good advice so far from some experienced breeders in this thread, so hopefully she is on track.

thanks everyone for the much needed imput so far havent noticed anything much going on my girls still swollen down below but looks like its kinda going away guess im gonna have to wait until next time im also concidering AI for the next go around but im interested in hearing more about the training of the stud dog how do you do that sounds like some info that can be useful thanks ti all
