This makes me angry... I always check my local classified for Yorkies, just a hobby, I don't need any more yet. But I ran across this ad this morning... AKC Yorkie Pups 5 wks., ready 9/25. Parents on site, 1st shots and wormed. "1" male and "1" female. $500 each. Call 704-xxx-xxxx...This means that they will only 7 weeks old when they go to their new homes. Do breeders not care anymore? I just don't understand. |
Yeah....that's why I tend to not even "look" in the paper. It generally only ends up ticking me off. |
Me too, I try not to look as well, it is just upsetting! |
I guess I will just have to stop looking too. |
I totally understand why you do it though there just to cute not to look at pictures of them LOL |
Don't look at me. I'm looking for a cocker spaniel or yorkie pup for a friend who wants to do rally obebinace classes and we can't find a breeder with puppies over 8 weeks old. Local papers or puppyfinder/kijji/hoobly/petfinder even from breeders who ship and that's not even legal let alone moral. Not all of them were what I consider a mill. One was a cocker show breeder who is apart of the American Cocker Spanial Club. Ecomony is bad enough that some people just don't care. How can you sell a small breed dog with only it's first 5 way shot at 6 weeks old and SHIP IT! Don't start me on health clearences. |

I am sure these breeders do care but they are just uneducated, like I was, as to what is the best age to sell pups. I think YT has been a valuable learning tool for many of us. All we can do it continue to educate people and if you come across someone selling young pups then mention to them the importance of keeping the puppies until they are older. We can't change the world overnight but we can try little by little. One of the problems out there is the puppy buyers. Many puppy buyers want a 7 or 8 week old pup so they can raise it their self. They don't understand that it is better to buy a older pup that is already weaned and socialized. They act like a 12 week old pup is a grown dog.:( |
I too browse my paper as well as puppy sites online. I found one yesterday on NextDayPets.com where a lady was selling a puppy for $5,000.00:eek:. She claimed that it weighed 0.9 oz. How is that even possible for a puppy that is 10 weeks old? I e-mailed her asking her if it was an error so we'll see. She also claimed that it would be under 2 lbs. Most of the puppies I saw on there were going to be 2-3 lbs and selling for $1,000 and the bigger puppies 4-9 lbs were around $500. It just makes me mad about what some breeders are doing to this breed. Their just trying to make the smallest babies to get the biggest bucks.:thumbdown |

That's the main reason why I get so angry. Many breeders do know that it's wrong, and they just want the money. |

She will be 12 weeks old on Monday. She's doing a lot better now. I am calling her Izzy. She has a great attitude and fits right in with the family. |
I think the main thing is that people just don't know what really is in the best interest of the puppy. We keep our pups 10-12 weeks min and I have had people say no way that is crazy we want the puppy at 8 weeks MAX!! After speaking with them - some will understand and now they know while others just don't care and just want the pup. |

Those poor babies. I hope they find loving, caring, and safe homes. |
I think this is exactly why YT is such an important resource, and why we should really value our members. Especially the ones who have put their whole hearts into the breed, and learned some lessons the hard way or through experience. Most people don't have "experts" at their fingertips, that can guide them through the process of picking a breeder, buying, rescuing, showing, breeding, health problems, testing, treatments, training, and loss. I guess the list could go on and on, but if we all keep educating each other and the people who want to know, then maybe less people will want to buy a 5-8 week old puppy. |
I got Lola at 8 weeks, she seemed healthy. Shes CKC registered and I took her to the vet for her check as soon as I got her and he said she was perfect health. Two weeks later, she had horrible eat mites, a week after that she got a resp. infection and eye infection. My vet thinks she didnt get enough immunity from her mom. She still has fits with getting sick but shes overall healthy. Shes 5 months old now. |

Update.... I have now quit looking at the paper. It's just too upsetting. |
SADLY but true, people want the pups at 7 or 8 weeks, when I was placing my yorkie jacks with my relatives most of them wanted them at 8 weeks and could not understand why I was keeping them with Taffy until 12 weeks.. and with this economy I can see why a breeder will let them go for financial reasons..I am breeding my silky terrier and I already told the future parents that pups stay here until 12 weeks I had a lady drop from my list because she wanted the pup at 6 weeks.. too bad her loss not mine..;) hugs, Carmen in nj |
