Diva has eclampsia. New pictures included of babies. 4 Attachment(s) This past week has been crazy. To begin with, I spent the week dealing with my grouchy 13 year old as she recovered from having her tonsils out. NOt a good week for me or her, needless to say. Then Thursday night, my 16 year old son came down with a stomach virus. Diva was being a little clingy but nothing unusual for her, or at least I thought it wasn't. We went to bed around 10:30 that night. At midnight, my 13 year old got up to go the bathroom and found Diva laying on the floor panting and stiff legged. She ran and woke me up and as soon as I saw her, I knew it was eclampsia. We called our vet to meet us, grabbed her and flew to the vets office. He immediately started IV calcium and fluids and within 10 minutes she was wagging her tail and acting like nothing had happened. He recommended upping her calcuim supplements and gradual weaning of the puppies to avoid mastitis. I went home and slept on the couch with her. I cannot tell you how terrifying that episode was. So now, I am allowing Diva to nurse very little and am supplementing with bottles. Which by the way is a nightmare. Those little 2 week old babies fight like pitbulls to avoid that bottle. They want their momma!! LOL Anyway Diva wears her onsie and can still care for her babies, but I plan to be totally on the bottle with them by Wednesday. Her milk production is much less now. We are still fighting with her to get her to eat dog food. She refuses to eat anything that I don't cook for her. Here are some pictures of my little spoiled babies. |
Wow! What a week!!! I hope your skin kids are feeling better soon and Diva starts eating. Too much worry! The pups are precious! Love the belly-up picture. My Chattie had hypocalcemia two weeks prior to whelping and was started on Calsorb (this was 2 years ago). She was on Calsorb twice daily until she finally weaned the pups around 8 1/2 weeks. She has always been a good eater, so I had that positive on my side. Good luck with the bottle feeding and getting Diva to eat. |
I am so sorry to hear you had such a rough week! Sounds like you have a great vet and she is doing better! I will keep her and pups in my prayers!!! I love the belly picture!!! Too cute!!! |
Wow! You have had a rough week! I hope everything gets better for your skin kids and fur kids. |
I am sorry about Diva, but her puppies are adorable!! I guess I would just cook for her (as if you have nothing better to do!!) for the time being; anything to get her to eat, right? Feeding the babies is not going to be fun. I find the bottles to be the worst of the worst. An eye dropper worked better for me or a syringe without the needle. Good luck. They sure do look fat and healthy though! :D |
Oh gosh, I saw your other picture thread (in the nursery?) but had no idea that momma had gotten eclampsia. I am happy to hear that she bounced right back from it & wish you well in bottle feeding the little ones. I also know exactly how you feel about getting these finicky mommies to eat; Halle has been a bit on the picky side herself. Getting better though, slow but sure. |
wow gosh what a week for you! i sure hope things are on the up!!!! I hope everyone is feeling better soon! |
They are adorable!!! Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. Hope the kids and Diva feel better soon. |
Congratulations! I hope all your kids are doing better! |
Wow look like you have been really busy! I am glad to hear that the little family is doing well. I always have the hardest time to feed puppies with a bottle. I use a syringe or dropper instead. |
oh Gosh I just saw this thread- I am so sorry you have had such an ordeal this past week. I am so glad you got Diva help so quickly and that she is doing fine. I know you must have been so scared. Thank goodness all is well now. Hope everyone has a speedy recovery at your house. |
