Playing, teaching or???? Good Morning; I hope somebody can help me. Miracle has been a very good mommy and still is but last night Rebel (her 8 week old baby) and her were playing for a while and then they stopped. He was laying on his bed and she started licking his nose and face and had her paw on his neck. He was trying to move away but she was letting him. I ended up taking her away. Also, yesterday and a bit this morning, when he is not playing with her, she will start growling at him and biting his neck. I know this is a form of play and teaching but I'm confused because sometimes he is just sitting there by her, not trying to play with her at all. I don't know if she has ever hurt any of her babies before and I am worried. I separated them last night and this morning. I'm not sure if I am worring to much or if she is getting tired of him. She still is cleaning and eating his poop and doesn't do it all the time. HELP PLEASE!!! |
It sounds perfectly normal to me. She is cleaning him and trying to play with him. It teaches him how to socialize with other dogs. She sounds like a good Momma! |

Thank you. I feel a little better now. She really is a good momma up until these two things happened. |
I do think that some mommas can be too rough with their pups but I have never had one really hurt a puppy. I think socialization is the hardest part of raising a litter. From my observations it seems that the alpha females seem to be much rougher on their pups. If you have a female that overdoes the playing and dominance I feel it can make a pup more timid. Your pup is still young and her behavior does sound very normal right now. I figure she was biting his neck in an effort to get him to play. |
