She's not a Yorkie! I keep meaning to post this, and realized after posting some puppy pics, that I should really say something. For those who saw the pics of, "The moose and his sister," and thought, "Those have to be the ugliest Yorkie pups ever!", they're part Silky!:p For years I thought Cassie looked so different than every Yorkie I had ever seen. She was bigger, had a longer snout, her floppy ears were a little more to the side of her head, than on top of her head, etc. I had heard of Silkies and looked up some pics of then! Oh my gosh! It looked like someone posted pics of my dog all over the internet! So, for those who saw our babies, and were too polite to comment on their floppy ears, and longer snouts - now you know why. LOL (I like floppy ears anyway, so I didn't tape them, but this way the look more like Mama.) For those wondering how I could have thought I got a Yorkie: 9 1/2 years ago, I began looking for a Yorkie and found one in the newspaper. I was looking for a pet, not a show or breeding dog. On a Sunday afternoon before church, we went to see her and fell in love with her. We gave the lady a deposit, went to church and dinner, then returned to come pick up our baby. When we first walked in, I had noticed that she had several small breed dogs, but didn't really question it; I didn't know much more than the existence of puppy mills, or anything like that back then. So, that evening we returned to get her, and since it was dark outside, it was easy to see through the windows of a detached garage that had the lights on. Through the windows, we saw cage, after cage, after cage. At that moment, I realized that this was a puppy mill. I felt terrible, but was determined to get that sweet baby girl out of there. That week I contacted a few organizations (Human Society, and a local animal shelter) to get info on how to help these poor dogs , but no one could help, b/c I saw clean, healthy-looking dogs. Of course I did! Duh! I walked into her living room, not into the puppy cage building. Luckily, about a year later, it was on the news that it had been shut down!:thumbup: The lady told me she didn't have the papers ready to give me to send in for her registration, and that she would send them to me. Whatever! I didn't care, and knew I would never see them. So, she was sold to me as a Yorkie (that's what that the newspaper said), and I had no reason to doubt otherwise, until I researched Silkies. So, I guess Sophie and Todd are actually Silky Yorkies. :rolleyes: This would explain why at 10 weeks Todd weighs over 4 1/2 lbs, and Sophie weighs almost 3 1/2 lbs! |
Awww.... I bet they are lovely just the same.... ;) Good thing she was shut down and at least your baby has had a good life with your family. |

I know there are larger Yorkies, but if you look at some Silky pictures, most look just like her. I truly have never, ever seen a Yorkie that looks like her. That being said, I also know no two animals of any breed will look exactly alike. Her snout, ears, and length of the body are all that of a Silky. Both breeds can be so similar, and I really couldn't care less. I just think it's funny that after 9 1/2 years, I know her true identity. Here are some pics of her. The first one is when she really, really needed a hair cut! Just watch, a bunch of people will have Yorkies on here that look just like her! :) |

I don't understand. --You know you got her from a puppymill, --she has no papers, --no parental history thus no health history, --you are not even sure of her breed, --her appearance doesn't meet either the Yorkie or the Silky standard, --and she is over 9 years old, so why did you breed her? :confused: This just is not making sense. Was it an accident? You have had her for 9 1/2 years unaltered? Has she been bred before? Are you going to spay the old gal now? Have I somehow misunderstood the situation you describe? This is just incomprehensible to me! |

My first "Yorkie" was ACA registered. He is now 7 years old. I have since purchased AKC yorkies (with attention to bloodlines) and have realized that our little "kix" is definitely a Silky Terrier too. He is about 8 lbs - and when at a small show recently realized that the Silky boy being shown looked exacatly like my little "kixie". No matter, we love him to pieces (he, my 18 yr old son and a large bassett/lab cross think they are all littermates!!!) Kix is neutered. He was our first and will always be special. |
Cassie is beautiful and looks like a Yorkshire Terrier to me. It is true that yorkies and silky terriers look quite a bit alike; but also keep in mind that the standard 4-7 lb Yorkshire Terrier of today came originally from several much larger breeds. So her size & features could be from that as well as the poor breeding done in the puppy mill she came from. She may even be a yorkie/silky mix, who knows.:confused: What ever the case, she is happy & healthy thanks to you and that is all that really matters. |

I have never seen a drop of blood from her, and unless I check for swelling, I never know. She will be spayed the next time she gets her teeth cleaned, so she only has to go under anesthesia once. One of my vet friends had told me she was too old to get pregnant. The day the puppies were born, I took them to the vet we see to get the oxy shot and check out the pups and she said once had a 16 yo Poodle patient that had gotten pregnant. Obviously, she completely disagreed with the other vet. I know this sounds like a horror story for breeders who know the familial history of their dogs, but for those of us who have dogs have pets with no plans for breeding or showing, it usually doesn't matter. Bottom line there: spay/neuter your pet! I am now the poster child for that quote! I love the puppies dearly, but I realized how blessed we were with such an easy pregnancy, delivery, and healthy pups and moms. It could have been a disaster. Needless to say, she doesn't go potty unsupervised anymore - tied up or not. I am sure of her breed. She is a Silky Terrier. I realize it's not the same as DNA testing, but after much research on her part, our vet agrees. |
