LP genetic or injury? A pup from my breeding has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 LP. He is only 5 months old. Because of his age I would lean toward genetic, however, I had him to the vet in June and his knees were fine. He runs around like a madman all the time so I wonder if it is injury. I know there is no way to tell, I just feel so awful for the poor guy (no symptoms right now, but I am sure they are coming!) I want to know what you guys think. The sire and the dam do not have LP, and his littermate does not have it either. Could it be both genetic and injury? Also, how long has he got to be symptom free? I can certainly try to slow him down, discourage jumping etc. but just growth wise, I figure he might be in trouble soon. Obviously I have never had a dog with LP before and I need lots of info! Thanks |
I do not have direct experience with this but here is a link that has some information that might help: JaLa Yorkshire Terriers...Luxating Patellas I have read here on YT that many puppies have loose knees but tighten as they mature. Thankfully mine have all had tight knees at their vet exam. I understand it would be difficult to think that a few weeks later they had Grade 2 LP and that it would be genetic, especially if it was just the one knee. I would be thinking as you are that it might have been due to the jumping. Is this a pup you have sold? Are you trying to decide what to do about warranty or future breedings? If none of the puppies resulting from breeding that dam and sire, nor the dam and sire themselves or their parents had ever had history of LP and you had just recently had them checked as free from LP, I would really be thinking injury instead of genetic. But there is probably nothing to cover at this point anyway. Early grade 2 is usually not operated on, especially in a 5 month old. So it is one of those wait and watch situations. I would still offer to take the puppy back if anyone was unhappy about it. If this is the only time you have seen this, I would not discontinue the breeding. It is not really pointing enough to anything genetic to tell you to stop using this dam and sire together or to stop breeding either of them. But this is jmo and I would get the opinion of one or two of the more experience breeders. If nothing else, my post will give your post a bump and maybe you will get more input! |
Thank goodness I did not sell this pup. He was a bit small, but has nice conformation and good coat and ear set. He has a fantastic personality. I gave him to my sis because she wanted him so bad, and since he was a runt I wanted to keep an eye on him in case he had problems down the road. She gives me access to the dog, I was taking him into my vet for his shots. I told her I would give her a full refund (haha I didn't charge). Along with his knees he is only 3.4lbs, for 5 months. He is going to stay tiny and have the problems that come with tiny dogs so I am really glad I gave him to her rather than sell him. She has no small children, is home all day with him, has great dog experience (was a vet tech for a long time). I of course would take him back, but I know she is deeply attached and will not let me. I instead will assist her in raising the funds to get him neutered and have surgery (hopefully will not be needed). I did not know that there is a possibility that his knees will tighten. I will pray for that and discourage jumping. Thank you for the site. I am reading up all I can on it. |
My aunt (she's a vet) said that if its a grade 2 then no surgery is recommened since its a low number. If it reaches a grade 4 and is causing him pain then you might want to consider surgery. My pup got his LP from my other dog pushing him off the couch (she was jealous and wanted all my attention). Since he is only 3 lbs (full grown) I'm waiting to see how badly it will hurt him. So far the only time he seems to favor that knee is when he has run alot or played alot. I don't think it was genetic and my aunt thinks the same thing. If you think it worsen with the next year talk to your vet. |
