I had a beautiful litter of 5 healthy pups april the 1st they have all gone to excellent homes. I decided one litter would be enough so i have booked my male dog to be spayed i booked at the vets 13 days ago and his operation is tommorrow. 2 days ago my dogs where tied, i have since kept them apart however my son let them both in the garden and they where tied again. I am concerned of the risk to her body i think it will be too much for another pregnancy so soon. I thought that since she had her pups in april it would be 6 months from that date for her season, however it must go from the 27th jan which was when she was pregnant last time, let this be a lesson for others reading this if someone can learn from my mistake. I just hope my little girl be ok and i will speak with the vet tomorrow to see what she can suggest.

I also didn't know that the dog goes into heat at the same interval, hmm.. (I thought the cycle "begins" anew after they whelp, I am new to this, learn something new every day!)

It will take its toll on her little body, so make sure you give her lots of very high quality food. Her body's nutrient stores are probably still low from nourishing her last litter. I have heard of people breeding back-to-back-to-back, over and over, because they are money hungry :thumbdown and those dogs survive. They're usually scrawny and weak but they survive. But the good news is, your dog is probably a lot healthier than these dogs. Under a vet's watch I bet she will be ok. Good luck!

My dog goes into heat every 8 months if she had a litter she goes into heat 6 months after the litter is born. My mentor/stud service maybe she is money hungry but she told me when I asked, because I thought youneed to wait every other season to breed again, told methat her vet said it is best to breed when they have onceagain if you are going to breed (back to back)if she seems well, because it is easer on them than to wait. THe older they get it is harder onthem. For that reason I breed back to back,she did well and she got fatter. I was lucky both times and she had 4 healthy puppies both times. I know that everyone thinks different I am not too sure what I believe. I know that my gal is healthy and weighs 6.5 pds after she has breed. My mentor said that they fill out the older they get. She also told me that if she was healthy shecould be breed again as longas the vet said that she was.
Now I know that many do not agree and not sure how many do. But this lady has more than one dog and she breeds. So she may be considered money hungry.I would consider her money hungry but she does take good care of her dogs, but I think you should only have as many dogs that you can spend the correct time that they deserve and need. I hope I am not shot at, because I did not say that I agree but I did fallow her lead.

mt female will change from 9 months to 6 months so sometimes its hard keeping up if you arent looking for it

yes she had a great pregnancy and a easy birth she has plenty of exercise and a good diet, is well looked after and weighs 6lb now,and i think that helps. been to the vets she said she could give her a couple of injections and that would terminate her pregnancy which would be under 1 week if any, but i think i will wait and see i have all the equiptment etc and if they not find good home s i would keep them as i have a big home. At the moment i just waiting for a call off the vet when to pick little alfie up from being casterated, the vet says he will stay fertile for 6 weeks. If that can be of any help to anyone. Heres hoping my little man is ok :)

You're not the only one that had the idea that Heat Cycles began from whelping date. You always count from the beginning from her last heat cycle...

We had our first litter in January. The Vet told us to wait until her second heat if we were to breed her. Well we waited until her fourth. She done very well with the first litter. She was being kept away from our male. And was so close to being out of heat when my dh came in and just let her and him run the house. I came in asked where they were, they were in the middle of my bed hung up. I was hoping since she was about to go out of heat, and they had only gotten together the one time that it wouldn't take - wishful thinking. Well she just had another litter. And she done very well with them, better than the first. I didn't want another litter of pups just yet. I wanted to wait at least a year for her to have another and then that be it. They had other plans.

I just re-read your post. A bit confusing. If your little girl had a litter in January, that would mean she was bred late Oct or sometime in November. You said you waited until her fourth? Did you mean her fourth heat cycle? That would mean she was coming into heat approximately ever 2 to 3 months.

There are two thought process on when and how to breed.

A female is born with just a certain amount of eggs to be fertilized. So, some breeders believe that if you don't breed your girl you're losing those eggs (which is true). Some breeders will breed back to back and skip one cyle and breed back to back. Others believe in skipping every other cyle. I truely believe each girl is different and it should be based on your girls health, how she handled the pregnacy and the whelp. It's a decision that should be made by you and your vet.

There is a vet that holds seminars, (who's name escapes me at the moment), but he teaches that, "A pregnant uterus is a healthy uterus". The reason he believes this is because the normal reaction of the body when they are in heat is to lower their immune response so if they are bred the uterus won't reject the embryo. If they don't get pregnant, the body maintains the lower immune system and leaves the uterus open to infection. This is the time when some females will get pyometria and most times need to be spayed. As a matter of fact, my girl D.D., was bred then skipped and bred again with a litter that on delivery presented with a sick looking, gray discharge. The vet didn't think there would be anything alive but during the spay the vet tech checked the removed uterus and found one little girl not yet consumed by the infection. I had her spayed since it's so hard to get rid of that infection and I just didn't want to put her through it. I did have NeeCee to keep my line going but I understand the thinking of the vet mentioned above.

I've been taught this too. However, it was also told to me that as in false pregnancies as well as non-bred cycles, one should consider antibiotics, especially while the uterus is open.....

This makes sence because mycousin had a terrior that she never breed and she got cancer the vet said that it was from not being breed or fixed.

I can see that suggestion. I would also suggest talking to the vet before hand so everyone is on the same page but it might help to avoid an infection.

Absolutey, talking to a vet. But, since my vet in Texas is pretty much a breeders vet, made the suggestion, when one of my girls went into her first cycle at 10 months of age then went into a false heat.
