ndyorkiemom | 08-18-2009 03:51 PM | I'm not trying to sound mean here but, what makes your male worthy of being a stud?
Just because he is AKC and has been used for breeding in the past doesn't mean that he should be used. Have you had all of the testing needed to be sure that he is healthy done, blood work up, Bile Acid testing, had his legs x-rayed. Have you had him evaluated for confirmation? What are his strong points as well as his weak points?
Are you prepared to help any owner of the bitches you breed place the resulting puppies, have you checked into what kind of testing the bitches have had to be sure that they are worthy of being bred? Have you done the research of your males pedigree so that you know what kind of dogs are behind him? Big, small, long nose, short nose, flat topline or roach backed, color, bite? There are hundreds of things to concider before you decide to breed even if you are only going to stud your boy out. It isn't a cheap indevor nor an easy one, are you prepared for the fact that if you don't do all of the testing and make sure that the bitch has passed all testing that your male could end up severly sick and even die from some of the dieases that can be transmitted. And don't forget the fact that you have to be hands on when it comes to breeding, you don't want the female dragging your male all around once they are tied. I'm sorry if I sound harsh that isn't my intent, it's just that in my opinion too many people want to breed just because they have a cute dog or it has champions in its bloodlines. This in and of itself doesn't mean that this dog should actually be bred. I wish you luck in your indevor. |
