Whelping Box Is there anyone that can tell me were I can buy a Whelping box, or give instructions on how to make one.:):animal-pa |
A lot of people on here use the under the bed storage plastic box as a whelping box which is a great idea and one that isn't particularly expensive. If you do a search on here on whelping boxes it should come up with others posts of what they use. |

What I bought and use is a box that was designed for Doggie litter. But, you can use a large plastic container/box with the sides high enough so the pups can't crawl out, but low enough for mom to get out. |
I made my own whelping bed. There is a pocket for the heating pad on the left side of the bed. The walls are high enough that the babies won't get out and my Raeley can jump into it. It give her enough room to have the babies on the right side without getting over heated. I still need to add the door, but it will have three heights. It will lay flat when the puppies are old enough to explore, it goes half way up to give nursing mamma easier access and to keep the new puppies from falling out, and it goes all the way up when the start getting more mobile. Here is a link to see what I have so far, it still needs some improvements but I still have time to correct that before she has her litter. Whelping Box pictures by MntSnowBabies - Photobucket |

We did the plastic storage box (large size) maybe 5 dollars. We had it layered with blankets. We put a blanket over the cut edge. The opening we made was like a triangle but very rounded corners and only big enough for her to get in and out. We put the heating pad on the bottom after all pups were whelped and we cleaned up. This was VERY easy to clean, the top could be off when we needed access to momma or the puppies. |
I used the plastic storage containers, not only do they work but very easy to clean up after the whelping mess. I also purchased one of those dog beds that radiate body heat and put velcro on it and the bottom of the container so when mama jumped in and out the pad didn't move, the pups didn't get under it and they remained warm while mama was away.... |
