Momma loosing hair Bella mia's puppies are almost 7 weeks old. They are weaned for the most part eating solid food. Today we gave Bella Mia a bath and we noticed she has lost A LOT of hair in approximately 1 1/2 weeks. It is all over and seems really thin. We can see her skin where before you never could see her skin. Any ideas about why this is happening and is there anything I should do? |
Maybe it is a hormonal thing? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that most females lose hair after whelping and nursing . . .I'll try to find the source. |

it is normal for moms to loose a looooottttt of hair after the litter, therefore one of the reasons responsible and conscious breeders do not breed every heat cycle. Make sure you keep feeding mom well balanced food, she is in need to replenish her own reserves. Do you feed a premium food? We feed a dry premium food. If she is "emaciated" you can keep her on puppy food premium of course, for a couple weeks and then starting changing to the adult food. Keep up with the good food and she will soon start to regrow a gorgeous full coat again. is this your first litter? XOXO |

She is fed Chicken Soup For the Puppy Lovers Soul as her kibble while weaning when she has completed her weaning then she goes back to dog lovers soul, she is fed eggs for breakfast with kibble mixed in and for dinner she eats boiled chichen, white rice, carrots, and american cheese mixed with kibble. I bathed her 1 1/2 weeks ago (useually it is weekly but I fell behind this week) when I last bathed her she did not have this hair loss. She doesnt seem to have any other issues...shes happy, playing, eating all normal. Yes this is my first litter. |
I am not familiar with this brand of food you are using. We like premium food and we usually stick to the dry food and do not supplement with home made cooking. If she has a good appetite the dog food is well balanced. Do not worry as her hair will come in. You will see it. Keep her happy !!!! XOXO |
Our vet warned us that Cassie would look scrawny and her hair would look thin after the puppies were born. I don't know if it's b/c she only had two pups or if it's b/c she didn't have the normal mommy stresses (since she didn't do squat for them! LOL), but she never looked bad. In fact she looks more beautiful than ever! LMBO! Anyway, I have heard that it is normal. Just give her a great diet, and now that the babies are weaning, I bet she'll get back to her beautiful self. :p |
Chicken Soup is a premium food. Mimi lost alot of hair after whelping her 1st litter. It's normal. She has grown it all back. So will your's. |

What your feeding is a good quality food. What is happening to your mom is she's blowing coat. Though other breeds do this normally, it's not very common with yorkies, but it does happen. My Go-Go did it every time she whelped a litter. The one thing to look out for (and this is based on personal experience) is that she doesn't begin to scratch/itch. If that happens, begin to bathe her in cool baths, every 3 days, good medicated shampoo. Watch for signs of little bumps where she's lost her coat. If that happens, have your vet look at her. It could be a staph infection....very easily treated with 10 days of antibiotics. |
I have had two bitches that "blew their coats" each time they had babies. it does come back after awhilee but it sure can ruin a coat. This happened to one of my champions. Fortunately, she was already championed before she was bred because I don't think her coat will ever be the same as it was before even tho the hair did come back. |

I've found that if I keep them in puppy cuts they do look better. |
She is itching a bit and when I bathed her yesterday I used Bio-groom Anti itch oatmeal shampoo etc yesterday. I also use Minksheen. She did seem a bit better after her bath. I do not see any bumps or anything else that looks strange. Her coat in front is silky smooth and in back cottony and fluffy, certainly not as silky smooth as before. Thanks for the help. |

I always said she looked like a ragamuffin before but it was because SHE would dirty herself rolling in the dirt or grass etc well now she REALLY looks like a ragamuffin even after her bath!!! Blowing her coat does it go front to back? |

Thanks Mary and no Sherman is not being shown. Shaun is excited to start training and bonding with Sherman. He wants Sherman to be his boy like Bella Mia is my girl. |

Somehow if they are unhappy it takes longer for them to bounce back to their normal self, but if she is all happy it is not going to take long at all. I saw the other posts about the hair never looking as good again. With our experience we noticed that after they loose all the hair they are supposed to loose , new beautiful hair comes in. We usually give a very short puppy cut after weaning the puppies. I am not sure if that is what could make a difference, as we only see the good new hair coming all together. The post about the infection is very interesting. We never had it so i have no experience, but the great thing about many different inputs is this: more heads think and know better than one ! She will be beautiful again ! You will see it !!! Ps.: Here they love the dressing up... so when they are not very happy i usually dress them up ... kkkk put new bows and stuff !!! XOXO |

Since I show dogs, show coats take a bit more cultivating. So, once I've bred a mom, they tend to go lighter and a bit sparser, not ever getting back to that show coat again. |

I found that depending on what you are feeding they do lighten up , you are right, but i also find that they put back color if they are fed puppy food a while after they wean the puppies. I have a retired "old" lady here that was very light after she had her last litter, 6 puppies... she got so emaciated... her hair is now the most gorgeous one, intense color an shiny, even after getting spayed. We noticed the food impact in color even with males. We have a champion male started getting a lot of silver in the roots. Eventually half of his hair was turning silver, we switched him and he started darkening up again. He is back to his 'glorious" days. But you can see the line, like someone who dies the hair blond then you can see the dark roots. I am not currently showing, but had so i am very familiar with the care and effort to grow a coat, care is never too much . XOXO |

I always thought it was weird that her back end was affected more, guess I know now that it isn't uncommon. |
