Three questions - please help!! I've been out of the "breeding biz" for several years, and so I need some help if anyone would like to give me their input. I have 3 questions. 1) I just sold one of my female's first litter. The pups had round worms. Of course, she was cleaning up after them and I saw the round worms in the poop after I wormed the pups. Am I supposed to worm the mamma dog too, since she ate their poop - or is she ok? 2) My other female (tiny girl) is pregnant and due around the 26th. I can feel pups moving around in her belly. How many of you recommend that I have her x-rayed or an ultrasound to see how many pups she is carrying? Is it a waste of money unless there is a problem in delivery? 3) When do you all start feeding your pregnant female some puppy food? Right after conception - or a couple weeks before delivery? Any and ALL help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!! Amber:confused: |

Yes, I would have her x-rayed. I usually don't do puppy food, discussing this with my vet, if you're feeding a good quality food, just increasing her meals is sufficient. A good tab with calcium after delivery, cottage cheese, cheese and a daily scrambled egg should be sufficient. And of course whelping pudding. |
Mom and puppies should be de-wormed starting at 2 weeks after the litter is born, then at 4 weeks , 6 and 8. You should use Pyrantel . Mild and safe on the right dosage. i use liquid. You can also use PANACUR-C , It is very safe for the mom, and the puppies can be de-wormed with this just before you sent them home, it is given over a 3 days period.I mean, the puppies should be de-wormed with panacur just once before going home, at 2, 4 ,6 weeks they can have pyrantel. We do Xrays after day 50 of pregnancy, very important so you know how many puppies are there, by then you can see how big the heads are, if GOD FORBID you have a normal delivery and one puppy gets "retained" in there how would know if you did not know how many were there to begin with? you can also see if they are on the right position or breech. We do feed dry PREMIUM puppy food right after the "tie"; towards the end IF she gets fussy to eat, start to loose the appetite we supplement with yogurt, cottage cheese, egg yolk ( be careful it is very fattening) chicken breast home made... But if all goes good and she has no stomach upsets and eats well we keep with the dry food only. After delivery we supplement with "a/d" , a prescription food from science diet that is very rich and has extra calcium. You can get this from your vet. I never used the calcium supplements so i am useless for advice on it. Blessings ! XOXO |
