Professional handler wanted
 
I am looking for a professional handler. Willing to fly in. Any suggestions. If I am going to spend the money , I want it to be worthwhile. So many people ask me why I don't get into showing. I don't have time, and my children are a priority as to not be traveling. I would like someone else to start for me though! Thanks

Barb Bissell is in Florida. There are several handlers listed in the show forum. You might want to cross post this there where show people will more likely see it.

Barb Beissel is one of the best, Kirstin McGregor, out of Canada (who is one of the best yorkie handlers) trained under her.

There is Luke and Diane Ekhardt out of Ohio (would send a dog to them in a NY minute)

Also, Trish Kulessa out of Oklahoma City, a personal friend I have sent a dog to her for training. I've been to her home and her dogs are kept in an immaculate environment. She's taken several yorkies to the top 10.

Do you already have a show dog? Handlers will not normally take on a dog to show until it is nearly in full show coat and they have to evaluate the dog and made sure it is worthy of showing.

Barb,

I disagree with you about a dog being in full coat. Professionals we begin to take a dog out as a pup.

I know that Trish has taken several from puppy hood, Championed them and taken them on to Westminster and the National.

So do Luke and Diane.

Mary, you are right that professional handlers will do that. I was thinking more of what most show breeders do. Unless money is no factor, I have been told that is it better for the owner to show and get the minor points on the dog and then if you are unable to travel and find the majors then is the best time to put them with a handler. I have just never seen any handlers in our area showing pups in the 6 to 9 month class. I know some will start showing pups when they are a little older. It takes a lot of work just keeping up the coat until they are old enough to show.

Since Texas is where I began my journey and I've traveled with a few handlers, one that showed for me in the beginning while I was training, finished her at 16 months of age. Several show dogs at 6 months of age. The reason was for that is training. If you wait too long to take them in the ring, some won't like it. Most of my dogs finish before they're in full coat. Usually before they're a year and half. And most prefer that you don't take them out yourself, because the dog will have to be retrained.

Mary, I know ideally that is how it should be done if you have the funds to do it that way. I know quite a few people that show and most do not do it that way. Handlers charge around $12 a day I believe for just boarding the dog, they charge the clients a portion of the cost of traveling to the shows, then there are entry fees and the handling fees. I would never send a dog with a handler without really checking them out and trusting them. I know their are some very good ones out that that specialize in yorkies and those are the only ones I would ever consider using and most of them have a waiting list. I just wish I could win the lottery then I would do it your way in a heartbeat but I since I hardly ever buy lottery tickets I don't think that will happen. I would just love to have my own owner bred and owner handled champion someday.

You're right handlers are expensive and few can afford them. But, if you think about it, it is a cheaper way to go. Entry fees and boarding fees are what get you. However, if you are handling your own dog, you can always split expenses if you're traveling with someone. I know that traveling to NY we've had 6 people plus dogs in a room. It's they only way you can afford it. The plane fare is the least of your expenses. Expenses are split between clients and they are more familiar and well known to the judges. So, they know what judges like what.

I would love to make the trip to NY someday. To me a big part of showing is the learning process and meeting nice people. If someone just goes and buys a nice dog, has someone else make it a champion and then sits at home and breeds it, what have they really learned? There is so much more to breeding than just have a champion dog. It takes a great knowledge of the yorkie standard and genetics. That is why it is good to have a mentor or someone knowledgeable about showing and breeding to guide you.

Here is my take on handling....I personally do not believe in putting a 6 month old puppy with a handler. I believe and this is just how I believe and do things and that is I wouldn't give or take a yorkie as a client or to a handler unless they were ready to win. I don't think it's fair for the client or owner to be out that much expense on a puppy. I as a owner handler, I will take out a puppy in the ring for experience and if we win then great but as I'm just now getting into handling I offer advise to put a yorkie with a handler when they are ready to win. Now with saying that...I wouldn't expect the handler to just put the dog out in a show without training the yorkie first and seeing how dog and human are going to mesh. That might take a month or two to be as one.
Again, this is how I see it and wouldn't waste my money on a handler unless my dog was ready to win and I as a handler wouldn't take a dog unless it was ready to win.

BTW....I'm a new handler in the Texas area :) what I mean by that is I'm new to taking on clients...I've finished several yorkies and just having finished my first client yorkie this past March and my proudest moment with Morgan was getting a 5 point major on her in NY at the Progessive Toy Dog Show! :)

Thank you for the great information. I will now at least have something to review and analyze. I personally don't mind the expense, as I feel it will be very worthwhile.
