Nail Maintenance for 10 Week & Under Puppies
 
I read in a book that I have that you should cut the puppies nails so they won't scratch mama while trying to nurse. I have done this since they were 2 weeks. However, now that I cut them they don't feel any smoother. Is cutting nails at this age necessary? I do have a very nice nail grinder that I was a bonus when I bought my clippers from Revival. I have yet to use the nail grinder on the adult dogs yet. Would the nail grinder be suitable? :rolleyes:

Absolutely necessary, the nails are needle sharp and cause mother a great deal of discomfort. I wouldn't use the nail grinder on young ones. A emery board would be better. They should begin being clipped at a week of age and weekly thereafter.

You should also begin shaving their ears on both sides, to get the weight of their ears. I begin this at a week of age too, also their foot pads so they don't go a slipping and sliding....they need sure footing when they are walking. Trim their little bums, I use baby manicure scissors to do that with.

After their first shots at 8 weeks......between 8 1/2 and 9 weeks......

I had a recent litter that were up and walking between 1 and 2 weeks...

Those lilttle needle sharp nails hurt mom. The ears, you want to give them all the help you can to avoid having to tape. Their bums, well give mom a break.
