Right now, I'm using hemostats and clamping below the dew claw. Clamp it for 15 sec. or so, then twist it around in a circle and the claw pops right off. However, I've had to go in a few times and cut a little more because it didn't get it all. |

Ok, that's what I have. Mine are curved. I just wasn't sure if they were sharp enough to remove the whole claw. I thought maybe the nippers would be stronger, but possibly not sharp enough to cut well. |

Sorry, but there is no way in heck I would let a vet cut a dogs tail off. Niyah was purchased that way because she is 2 and it was done a long time ago but that is barbaric imo. I know that people do this because that is the standard with AKC but I would like to see the US ban this practice in this country like England did recently. I cannot understand why PETA has not got involved with this to stop this from happening. AKC should accept dogs for who they are and would sure like to know who started this whole thing years ago in the first place. |

I was just going to start a thread about this! So sould I do the tails and dew claws at 4 days old?? I wasn't sure what day. My babies are 2 days old now. This will be my first time and I am sooo nervous but I know I can do it. tx |
I always dock tales on day four as long as the pups are strong and healthy. |

I really feel tail docking should stop i love the long tails on my babies. It fans out so beautifully and they have something to wag. I do like the dew claws though because im always worried they will get snagged on something later in life. But glad you had a problem free first tail docking experience.:) |

I just did tails and dew claws today for the first time. Don't mind the tails but I really don't like the dew claws! |

It really is not nearly as bad as it sounds. They let out a tiny little yip and that is it. None of mine seemed to let it phase them at all. With the super glue on the ends, no infections or bleeding and they heal so fast. The way mine are always sneaking through an open door, I am glad there is no long tail to get caught behind them. I am sure they adjust though and long tails are beautiful too. I just prefer the AKC standard look. That is what I fell in love with and waited years to have. I certainly understand the opposite view though. With or without a tail, there is nothing like a Yorkie! |

Thanks! |
Congrats! I would like to learn how to do this as well. Because I moved recently and had to go through the whole find a vet thing. (My mentor breeder use to dock tails for me in the past) I called Banfield Vets in my area and they wanted to charge me $330 to dock tails and declaws for TWO puppies! I told the office manager there that was the most insane price quote I had ever heard. What a rip off for those who have paid that much or even close to that much! |

Even if you had 4 puppies that would be a lot but for 2 puppies only sound like a rip off to me too. |
