Cutting the cord I would like to know how to properly cut the cord, with step by step instructions and what tools to use. I've always let the mom's chew off the cord, but back in January I lost a puppy this way even tho the Vet stitched her up. So I've decided to do it myself, but I am really nervous and scared. I have a litter due in a week. Thank you! _______________________ cheryl :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
If you go to www.debbiejensen.com you will find a section there on cutting the cords. |
I use two sets of hemostats. I put both on, then cut between them with scissors. I leave them on the cord, one to hopefully keep the placenta from slipping back up into mom and the other to completely crush the cord so it doesn't bleed. After a few minutes I remove the one attached to the puppy and after the placenta is delivered I have a handy dandy way to pick it all up and dispose of it. |
I tie off with unwaxed dental floss about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the puppy and snip with surgical scissors than apply white iodine. |
Where do I get the hemostats and antiseptic from? Where exactly do I apply the antiseptic? OMG...I'm so nervous about doing this , but I know I can't risk losing another puppy. The mom that is about to have puppies did it right w/her first 2 litters, and it was a different mom that chewed to far down back in Jan. But I still don't want to ever take that chance again. Thanks ya'll. |

I Tie the umbilical cord as closed to the puppy's as possible, really on the "stub', then i use another piece of unwaxed dental floss and do another tie about an inch apart from the first, then i cut with an old scissors that is not sharp. The second tie is not really needed but i do it anyways, i do not like to see all that blood coming from the placenta. Remember that everything needs to be very clean, scissors sterilized. As soon as you cut the cord, dip it on IODINE to prevent infection and to make it dry faster ... Very easy , do not be scared, you can do it and you do not even need to by hemostats if you have a good pair of tiny dull scissors that you can use !!! Good luck with your babies !!!!!!! XOXO |

~Thanks everybody for getting back to me so quickly. I think I'll use unwaxed dental floss this time, and go ahead and order the hemostats for later. I am thinking that if I did order hemostats for this litter, they might not arrive in time. Tomorrow on my way to work, will stop by Walgreens and get white iodine and floss. After reading all your posts, I don't think I'm so scared now, but still nervous about it. I looked at Debbie Jensen's pics on her website and it all makes sense to me. Thanks again!!:) |

Send puppy pictures !!!! XOXO |
I now have the unwaxed dental floss and iodine. I have ordered the hemostats so I'll have them for the next time. Will post puppy pictures. Right now mom is at day 62, her last litters were days 67 and 69. I'm sure I'll be nervous and a little scared, but hopefully the next time I'll feel a little more comfortable and have more confidence in myself. Thanks again ya'll with all your words of encouragement. cheryl :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

Good luck with your litter! |
I got two sets of Hemostats from Amazon for $5. I didn't have to use them with Kalina's litter. I just used a clean rag to pull out the placenta and tied the cord about 1/4 inch from the belly and snipped just beyond that. All the bellies look really good. I do think it's good to have the hemostate on hand though...I was lucky and had fairly long cords. |
