Post-puppy teats We just acquired an ex-breeding dog and I was curious about her teats. Will they ever shrink back down? Right now what I would call her nipples (not sure of the dog terminology here.) are pronounced and surrounding area kind of baggy. The last litter she had was quite a few months ago and she is around 4 years old. She is also a skinny little thing and I wonder if that is a factor. I probably sound pretty dumb to you guys but I'm not in the biz so I've never dealt with it before. Just curious. Thanks |
Lou, I don't know anything about the subject at hand, but I love that you edited your post due to grammar!;) I'm sure someone will be along soon who can answer your question. |
All of my females that have had pups would get back to normal within 4 months of having pups. I have seen other females with huge ugly teats. I have wondered if it was because the owners let the momma get mastitis and did not take care of it or if they left the pups with the momma too long. Sadly, some people leave it up to the momma to feed the pups entirely until they are 6 weeks old and don't start the weaning process early enough and I think that can take a tole on the momma. The mommas should not be forced to stay in a pen with the pups when the pups start getting older. |

Gracie has had 4 litters with two resulting in singletons and the other two consisting of only two puppies. Each time one of the two died so the remaining puppies were raised as singletons. I know the breeder offered food to the puppies and Gracie was never forced to be with them but was an overly protective mama and rarely left them I am told. I would think she has had more than enough milk for one puppy at a time. Is that a factor? I have attached a photo of her with Skeeter (She is his and Adie's mother.) Skeeter is only a few days old in the photo and it looks like she has plenty to feed him! (I know, Skeeter was/is a moose.) I will as the vet about it when I take her in on Monday. |

Most girls that have had a heat cycle or have had litters will never have the tiny nipples that they once had. There nipples will be somewhat pronounced. If they've had a litter, they have been stretched by nursing. I have pets that have been spayed prior to their first heat.....flat as a pancake. Others that have had 3 or 4 litters, with pups being introduced to food early as 3 1/2 weeks....Even mom's that have had a litter and never nursing, or girls that have had a couple of heat cyles and have never had a litter.....their nipples are more prominent/pronounced. What can I say, Mother Nature & gravity. It has nothing to do with how long pups have been allowed to nurse. Think about it, older women do not look the same as we did when we were 20, especially if we've had children. |
