Silky coat predicted by puppy's feet
 
I just read an interesting article that says you can predict that a puppy will grow up to have a silky coat by looking at the coat on her feet when she is a puppy. If it will be silky, the coat on the puppy's foot lies flat. If it will be soft, the coat on the puppy's foot is fluffy.

What are your experiences with this?

Experience is pretty right on. Silky coated pups tend to have less hair on their legs and feet.

Soft Coated tend to look like fuzzie bedroom slippers.

That's interesting. It seems like most of the puppies I see in ads look like fuzzie slippers. Are silky coated puppies (and adults) rare? The image I have of an adult Yorkie is the silky coat. (And that's the kind I dream of having.) Or maybe that's why a silky coat is so highly prized, because it's rare?:rolleyes:

No, not rare at all, if you are breeding correctly. What is difficult to achieve is the color. There is much emphasis on the coat. The coat is the crowning glory of the yorkie, structure and health is much more important.

Have you been to a AKC dog show. Yorkies in the ring are silk coated. Occassionly you will have a soft coated dog, though it's not desired or standard.

Silk is preferred and not rare at all and I agree Mary structure and health should be more important than color and coat.
I see soft coated yorkies in the ring all the time LOL! I don't mind a modified silk coat it's easier to grow LOL...true silk coats take freaking forever to grow and is not as thick like a modified silk coat is. Radar has that nice fine silk coat and takes forever to grow! BUT finally his facial furnishings are getting long YAH!!

I don't mind a modified either, as you say it doesn't take that long to grow. I thought Charmer was a modified, because he had a thicker shaft in his hair strands.....but, then I changed my mind because he didn't start growing coat until he was 18 months of age.

yeah radar's hair wasn't too the floor until he was almost 2. I finished him right at 2 and his coat was just then touching the floor.

I didn't bring Charmer out until he was 2....coat not yet to the floor, but at 2 1/2 when I finished him his coat was beyond the floor.

well I finished Radar in August just after him turning 2 and it was just touching the floor of course now its' past the floor and I have to cut it about every 2 months....seems like it took forever when he was growing up but now it grows fast...guess it's because I keep him wrapped all the time lol....now just wish the face furnishings were too the floor lol

Charmer's facial furnishings grew before the rest of his coat....I had no problems there.....

I can grow coat it's just the facial hair I have a hard time growing LOL...Radar's mustache is about half way and his ear furnishings are almost there. Funny thing is the non show side mustache is shorter than the show side lol

Ain't that the case most of the time. CJ's non show side is longer than his show side....Ticks me off, I'd like to turn him around on the table and when he's in a stack.

I don't think I could identify a modified silk. :confused: I have a lot to learn. (That's why I'm starting my research now.)

Yes, that is Radar in my avatar.
Identifing coat texture is still hard for some and it's all for interputation in my opinion. If one really reads the standard the definition of a silk coat it's of like "fine" silk thread and very slow growing. In my interputation of a modified silk coat when the strands of a coat is thick and grows faster than a pure true silk coat but silky feeling it in my opinion is modified silk coat but of course that is just my humble opinion :)

Pixie is a silk coated one and her hair legs lays flat, my other 2 are cottony coats and they have a lot of fluffy hairy legs.

I loved Cali's Castle (cute trick, ringing the door bell ;)). All the Yorkies (and Maya) in the pics look beautiful!

Is "cottony" or "soft" the same as "wirey"?
 
Is "cottony" or "soft" the same as "wirey"? I've seen descriptions that a puppy will have a wirey coat. But, to me the word wirey doesn't suggest soft or cottony. Is wirey at the other end of the spectrum from silky? Like, silky --> modified silky --> cottony soft --> wirey?

Nope, swoft and cottony is not the same as wirey. Wirey feels more....stiff, harsh.....

Coat texture is something that can't be learned over night....At some dog shows they do have dog seminars and some conduct lectures on breed specific coat textures......However, as Donna said....you can discuss it till you beat it to death and at times it's subject to interpretation. jAnd coats can be enhanced for the ring. But, eventually you'll know a good coat when you feel it.

It seems to be like making candy. You can read the recipe about "glossy," and beating 'til "dull," but until you make it with someone who knows and you can see the different stages, you don't really understand.

Interesting.

Soft coat puppy do look more fluffy all over so it make sense.

Some people will never understand the differences and again it's all up for interputation for each individual. I see things in black and white and my interputation is probably quite different than most. I have felt a pure true silk coat and I've felt a soft coat and a cotton coat and my interputation will be different than some but when you feel a true silk coat there should be no doubt about it :)

Man I was soo close to figuring out my Versace's coat until I read this. His coat takes FOREVER to grow. He is soooooooo soft!!!! But he is fuzzy and get's called fat when I try to let his coat grow out. And my brinklii seemed silk to begin with (less fur on his legs) but now his adult coat is growing in and its soo cottony. Geez ... what is going on? LOL Can you tell which has what coat just from description?

From your discription both sound soft coated. However, one must see and feel a coat to give one's educated opinion.
